Pete Erskine. I'd listen to him over most of the shredding drummers every time. What a groove master.

Whew! You don't think of Garbarek getting funky but he did there, and Erskine and Vitous were just sick!

I love Erskine's light touch! If only some rock drummers I know could learn how to play with such a light groove...

Love Erskine in this clip. He's such a wicked and yet overlooked drummer. His solo his pure brilliance! Not big bangs and cymbal crashes- but quick, precise and extremely complex; arythmic and almost as if he's syncopating to his own beat - technically awesome. That smirk he has at the end of his solo is highly deserved! And yes, to that previous comment - there was a time when Garbarek could be all funk! Too bad those days seem to be gone...

P Erskine is my settledown favorite,, you know; when you´ve listened to all those hot drummers out there Peter is streaming down everything of what these drummers do to his own laydback resume!! A great storyteller in soloing! Thats what counts, not fast blizzards in rolls or twirling sticks...

I have found that when I play lightly like Peter does, it is easier to hear and thus execute those cool grooves with the oh so light ghost notes in between the accents. Indeed, it's the ghost notes that really give it that groove/pocket. Peter does it flawlessly.

exactly . . well put . . "storytelling" is the final frontier for a musician . . and not many can get there.

Vitous's first solo album 'Infinite Search' is still one of his best. It has some hi-energy playing by John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock (playing the fender rhodes), Jack DeJohnette and Joe Henderson. If you like what Miles Davis did around '68 / '69 you'll like this. If this is a little too wild for your taste, try 'Journey's End' from '82. It has a thoughtful, relaxed atmosphere and features some very elegant lyrical improvising by the leader and reedplayer John Surman.

@Scottehicks From the few musicians I have met/played for, I think it would be GREAT if most musicians would learn some sensitivity. Meaning that most musicians I have met were/are lacking in it....
