I once heard this song during an early morning rain, getting ready for grade school in the late 60's. For reasons unknown, my sister was playing it on her little blue-and-white RCA phonograph while we were in that final rush to head on down the steps and out the door. To this day, every time I hear this song I think of that early morning rain, and every time there's an early morning rain, this song plays on an old phonograph in my memory.

I can not believe its been 51 years since this song came out. I was a 12 year old boy back in 1966 and love the folk music of the 60's. Peter, Paul and Mary, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez and Bob Dylan made folk music cool to listen to. They were great social conscious songs that relate to time immemorial. Gordon Lightfoot touches that sad place of longing in the heart across the chasm of choices made. Such effective poetry. I'm 21 and my dad I always listened to Peter, Paul, and Mary. They had true talent that doesn't exist anymore. Love all their music, because it has soul and it touches so many.

I too was lucky enough to see them perform live (boy, am I old). I can still close my eyes and see Mary give that little hair toss 🙂. I agree with those who say that no one has ever performed this achingly beautiful song better.

She and Cass had such distinctive voice. They could sing a song and you knew it was them. In men, it was John Denver and Bob Dylan.

PP&M's best song!! Dreamed that one day I would fly a Boeing 707, the airplane mentioned in this song, and my very favorite airliner. I use to marvel that it's tail was 50 feet tall (5 stories), and in 1968 when I was an 18 year old college student, I used to look at my 5 story tall dormitory and be blown away that an airplane's tail could be that tall. But I got to the airlines in 1986, too late to fly the B-707 as most had been parked by then. And by the year 2000, I was a Boeing 767 captain for United airlines and the tail of my airplane was 60 feet tall and my plane weighed 150,000lbs more than a 707. Still, I love the 707 more than the 757/767s that I flew for United, and it is still bigger than life to me and this song just makes it more so. In the late 2000s, I would occasionally see John Travolta's Boeing 707 at LAX or JFK and seeing that airplane still flying always brought a smile to my face.

I thought Paul's voice was the backbone! He had such a rich tone, incomparable range, could dip down so low and come back. I loved tge songs he sang lead on. No group ever compared with the rich sound and harmonies. Never heard anything like them and never will! My sister's were ten and 14 yrs older so I grew up playing all their albums. Introduced a lot of my friends. They played the soundtrack of my childhood and I am a better person for tuning in!!

And i might add that that style of playing was very unusual with the guitars . I have never heard anyone come up with styles and sound like Noel and Peter did.

These artists were the pinnacle of harmony and melody for me, it just can not get much better. Hearing their tunes brings back memories and a sense of nostalgia and yearning for a simpler and gentler time. The mid 1960's through early 1970's in my humble opinion produced some of the greatest music ever recorded. It is often said that music is a reflection of society. So perhaps the political and social upheavals and issues of the day were reflected in the music and influenced the artists to write and record such powerful, poignant, politically charged, and socially relevant songs that touched the soul of a nation and caused many to take note of what was transpiring around them and to pursue a course that would facilitate change. I said the music lead me to yearn for a simpler and gentler time, but I certainly remember the 60's as being froth with social change, sometimes violent. Even with all that was going on, people in general seemed to hold a greater respect for institutions and other people back then, excepting some the the bitter hatred observed in the south directed towards people of color. This music will always resonant with me.

Yes. But this song is simply about a man yearning for a woman who is leaving him (that big 707 set to go.) That's all. Written by Gordon Lightfoot.
