James Kalm invites viewers to come and luxuriate in a sixty year retrospective of one of America’s proto “Bad Boy Painters”. With approximately sixty paintings, spanning nearly sixty years of output, this one hour program documents an historic show co-curated at the New Museum by Massimiliano Gioni, and Gary Carrion-Murayari. Beginning with Saul’s move from Bay Area action painting, to his raunchy depictions of cartoon Pop and funk, this painter has critiqued nearly every aspect of American society, with many works becoming satirical signposts of cultural paradigm shifts. This program was recorded February 18, 2020.
