An important thing to remember is that contrabass and lower instruments are not meant to be exclusively solo, if solo at all. These few solos exist merely to exhibit skill and the performance of the instruments. They are built for choirs:how many woodwind "choirs" so you see that have a contrabassoon or another family take the lowest part? This was made so you could have the flute timbre across the entirety of the range.

It takes some seriously powerful lungs to be able to get air all the way through that huge instrument, more air than any instrument ever made, surely.
@philaeew4866
8 жыл бұрын
+Diana Lamb (smilingboss7) well, like with any other instrument with a big bore and a longer body, it's not really as much about the air as you might think, since it's not the airflow that produces the sound, but the vibrations. A tuba, for example, does not take ten times as much air to play as a trumpet even though its inner volume is more than ten times that of a trumpet. I'd assume it does take more air to play than a regular flute, but probably not as much more as the size might suggest.
@smilingboss77
8 жыл бұрын
+Jutta Wehlan / Philae Well, you're not wrong. But just from experience from switching from trombone to tuba to trumpet to french horn to baritone and back to trombone in school, there is a significant difference in the amount of air and balance of air it requires to get it to sound correct in every single instrument. But flutes in general literally take more air than any brass instrument because only a little bit of air goes into the flute, and the rest skims along the top of the mouthpiece and off of it.
@philaeew4866
8 жыл бұрын
+Diana Lamb (smilingboss7) You might be right there. I'm a trumpet player, too, and as most people who have ever played in an orchestra for a certain amount of time, I've tried most of the bigger brass and a couple of wood winds, but I've never played a wood wind lower than a clarinet, so I could mostly just go from my experience on brass instruments. I found playing tuba or trombone to be not especially challenging, to be honest (when it comes to the amount of air required), but yeah, it might be different on flutes.

One reason that bourdon pipes are prevalent in pipe organs but the human equivalent has only latterly been introduced (and is seldom used) is that the pipe organ's bellows (in the early days, thru the 19th century) or blower (20th century thru present) can put a MUCH GREATER VOLUME (not necessarily pressure... VOLUME) of air through the pipes than a person's lungs can supply, even if blowing one pipe at a time. You CAN sound pipe organ bourdons by mouth (I've done that for fun with some of the 16' pipes from my Wicks organ) but they are much fainter and whispier sounding than done by the blower, via the windchest.

I have to wonder, if some kind of split mouthpiece / leadpipe were invented for this, where three people could blow into it at once, would it sound stronger and better? I think so, although all three people would have to agree to breathe / phrase at the exact same time and not pop up the octave / overblow until called for.
