Certainly, one of the best, if not the best performance of this symphony here on You Tube! The orchestra members play their hearts out for this great conductor!

Bravo.❤

Love that the conductor isn’t afraid to let all the musicians shine whenever they have their moments! Sometimes it’s best to get out of their way and let the instruments play out!

This symphony always takes me back to the beginning. I occasionally spin that old LP on The Kenwood turntable for a trip to the early seventies; featuring Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic in Moscow? Or maybe Leningrad? My favorite is the second movement with the horn after the somber introduction. PWG

Tchaikovsky is one of the greatest composers to ever exist. He wrote many earth shattering works. But the greatest and most encompassing of his life and scale of artistry, in my humble opinion, is the 5th symphony. It reaches to the depths of the soul like very few other pieces can. As a fan of ALL his symphonies (which are magnificent each of them) they don't hold a candle to this one.

A wonderful performance. However, this symphony is not subtitled "Fate"; that sobriquet applies to his fourth (F-moll, op. 36).

Hi, ted! The Fifth Symphony got the subtitle (not by Tschaikowsky himself) the faith, so the video description is correct. It seems that in some, english speaking sources you find the Fourth in connection with the faith motive, but we cannot find any reliable source for that subtitle.

@@WDRKlassik Thanks; I found that the recurring main theme (motto theme) is sometimes called the "Fate theme" [Fate, by the way, not Faith], so you are correct. However, the Fourth Symphony is ALSO called the Fate symphony. It is a confusing situation!

Let’s say Symphony 4, 5 and 6 together is the trilogy of Fate by Tchaikovsky.
