40:17 Peter gives a super interesting perspective on the reason why NASDAQ shares trade at such high P/E ratios. Still true today!

Indeed, he does repeat the core components of his thesis (some parts even verbatim) from one conference to the next, but you have to admit that they are sooo powerful that it is inexplicable that they have not become mainstream yet. On the other hand, PT demonstrates in the q&a round that his lucidity, articulateness and presence of mind are exceptional in an age where it has become commonplace for standup comedians to give commencement speeches at leading educational institutions.

I love that Thiel goes on these beautifully enlightened tirades, providing mountains of evidence, and the moderator essentially just gives an "Alrighty, then" à la Jim Carrey, Ace Ventura. (44:30)

your mind is attempting to merge two of your intellectual icons. peter thiel talks to move people, for a living, and makes billions getting people to actually build the future. sam harris talks for a living, and moves people to fantasise about the future, and makes thousands, getting people dumber than they were before they encountered him.

30:40 Can we just take a minute to point out that writing in 2019, this was the dominant trend, from 2013-2019. A rejection of globalization with an increasing bullish sentiment towards tech. The guy is some kind of time travelling prophet.

How about instead of a prophet he’s actively working to institute the changes we wish to see in our world. Just like the rest of us (my lazy ass definitely included) should do that believe in what he thinks

David Friedman seems to believe that the way out is for people to live most of their lives online. This does require some technological progress. But brain/computer interfaces are getting better and better and do not seem fundamentally impossible. If "life" is lived online we might be in good shape even if the world of stuff gets stagnant.
