Very pleased to find this on KZitem! I saw this when it originally aired and i was fascinated with the history of Russia and the old Soviet Union as i was learning about it all in Grade 8 at the time! Brings back memories of my teen years and the late 80s! I saw a lot of Peter Ustinov on tv back then. He was on everything from the Muppet Show to doing American Express commercials as well as this series and Inside the Vatican, telling us about the history of the Popes and Vatican City! I learned so much from him and it fuelled my love of world history! He was a very talented and fascinating man!

I haven't seen this, since it aired on TV. I still remember the part with Ivan 4th.

Bambin, what an interesting series and surprising it exists. In the description would you please note the year it was filmed? Perhaps also what motivated Ustinov to make it. Russia's history is so important for us in the West to understand, especially now.

How strange to Ustinov playing it straight! He's almost scary! And I couldn't have pictured him in straight role. LOL!

The first Russian capital was Old Novgorod! That was before Kiev.

@@mihai-dinulazarescu9124 I wouldn't know myself and I have no reason to care, but that's not what Ustinov says here, starting at 15:50 through 16:51. Most especially please listen to 16:25 to 16:51.

Peter Ustinov was such a great talent, but he was such a poseur. He made out, for example, that he spoke Russian - but he did not. An old friend of mine here in Russia worked as interpreter for Ustinov. Many years ago I asked him, "Did Ustinov speak Russian?" The answer came "Not a word!" 😃
