Petropavlovsk is a city in northern Kazakhstan, the administrative center of the North Kazakhstan region.
The northernmost regional center of Kazakhstan, is located in Northern Kazakhstan 40 km south of the border with Russia and 185 km from Kokshetau (along the A-1 highway), 428 km north of the capital Astana, 278 km west of Omsk and 273 km southeast of Kurgan.
The population of Petropavlovsk at the beginning of 2023 is 222,076 people. The city covers an area of 224.91 km2.
Petropavlovsk is located in the southwestern part of the West Siberian Plain, on the right bank of the Ishim River, the longest tributary of the Irtysh. Not far from Petropavlovsk there are many lakes and ponds: Lake Bolshoye Beloye, Lake Motley, lakes Kishtibish - 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th, Lake Maloye Beloye and Gorky Lake. Also within the city limits you can find small forests, mainly consisting of birch trees, and there are also pine plantations.
