Origins Explained. A carnival came through my town a few years ago and one of the green iguanas liked my car apparently and climbed around my tires. Lucky for him I found him and knew he wasn't a wild lizard from the area (Tennessee.) So I took him home with me until someone could adopt the little guy. So beware of carnivals they have all kinds of animals you can win as prizes.

I don't understand why you'd ever release a pet. I had two mice that I didn't really like, but I still kept them until they died from old age. Releasing an animal that was bred in captivity into the wild is dumb and cruel. If you buy a pet you are responsible for them. People are so weird.

Why didn't you like your pet mice?
@MsLilly200

We never managed to teach them to handle being, well, handeled. They bit me loads of times until i basically gave up and just let them be. My babysitter actually had two mice that I really liked that were super sociable and nice, hence why we got mice in the first place after our cat died.

When I was a kid, my mum spotted a silver fox rabbit running around across the road from our house. With the help of a few people passing by, we caught him. My mum contacted people and put posters up to try and reunite him with his owner, but no one claimed him, so we took him in. We had that rabbit fifteen years. He loved to eat grapes (My Stepdad would feed him three every day, if there were four, he'd leave one and if there were two, he would bite my Stepdad), he enjoyed chasing our cats around when they were outside, and due to his escaping abilities, he even became a great grandfather. Sadly, he passed away about seven years ago now because he was ancient at that point. But apparently, the last thing he did before he died was eat a massive carrot. I miss that rabbit, he was such a character.

A very small young English Lop rabbit hopped into my yard one hot summer day. No one in the neighborhood claimed her so she had her own 2 room rabbit hutch outside for the 5 years she lived with me. She had solar heating and heated water dishes in the winter and a shade tree and small fan in the summer. Bugzy was leash trained and went on walks at least 3 times a week. She was the best thing to happen that year.

The goldfish in your bowl aren't small because they're small animals. They're small because they aren't being cared for properly. Put them in a big tank or pond with sufficient filtration, and you'll see how big they get when they aren't soaking in filth with poor nutrition and insufficient space. Yes they're just goldfish, but you shouldn't keep any pet you can't or won't care for properly.

Actually they just grow to the size of whatever they live in so....
@irwyn9157
7 жыл бұрын
The saying, "they grow to the size of the tank/environment" is actually a myth. Just like people,their growth/size is determined by their genetics (and carp are large fish). However, keeping a goldfish in a too-small environment stunts the growth of the animal, which reaches, on average, 12-14 inches in length. The goldfish in a too-small environment will likely reach approximately 4-5 inches. While not "big", picture a 5 inch animal in a 1 gallon or smaller bowl. 5 inches is way too big. And, they can grow pretty quickly. I've cared for some that grew from 1.5/2 inches to 5 and 6 inches in less than 6 months.Not only that, but stunting a fish's growth leads to deformation, pain, and extremely poor health. A goldfish's average lifespan is roughly 20 years or so; not a "just a few days/months."Also, goldfish are very messy and produce a lot of waste. As a result, a large volume of water is necessary to dilute the toxic waste for the fish to be able to survive, as well as a large, efficient filtration system to help remove fish waste. Remember, goldfish are carp (a domesticated type thought to be descendent from wild Asian carp), and carp are known to be large and messy fish. Thus, goldfish are also large, messy fish.Taking all this into account, the bare minimum for a single goldfish to survive in would be a 30 gallon tank with equivalent filtration. Even this is too small.Goldfish are fairly social, so one should really have a group of goldfish, not just one all alone. Even a small group of 3 goldfish would require a minimum (based on the above statement) of a 90 gallon tank; although, with 3 times the waste, even 90 gallons would most likely not be enough. Basically, goldfish are really only best suited either in a large private koi pond, or in the hands of a very experienced hobbyist with plenty of room, time, and money to dedicate to the keeping of these wonderful fish.

Wow, that sounds very nice, I haven't seen any black cockatoos for about 4~5 years. Used to have two who'd regularly fly over the freeway on the way to work. About talking cockatoos; we used to have a pair of pecan nut and a pair of macadamia trees in the neighbour's yard. We'd get white cockatoos visiting every year. Mum damn near had a heart attack when she heard someone cheerfully saying "hello!" from the top of one of the pecan nut trees. Turns out it was one of the cockatoos. I've been pretty keen on planting some macadamia trees in our back yard to coax them back again, but my living conditions have't been stable enough to raise the seedlings past around 15cm.

its intrusive because animals don't have a choice about it, animals released in the wild with the exception of birds don't have the luxury of traveling across different environment that will suit them, so they don't have a choice but to live and breed in that area. humans on the other hand have the choice to either adapt to the environment or to change the environment to suite them, hence thats why its called conquering.

I had a Monster(evil) goldfish named Bob once...got him at the fair along with 4 other goldfish and it stole fish food from the other fish until it was twice their size. Then Bob preceded to beat up, steal food, and then eat all 4 of the other goldfish. We then bought 2 sucker fish to clean the tank. Bob ate one but kept the other alive, probably to have a butler that cleaned up his "messes"(At this point we thought Bob was a truly evil cannibal mastermind) After 3 years we decided to get the biggest goldfish we could find(half Bob's size) but Bob didn't want any other fish in his big tank stealing his food so he beat the crap out of it when we weren't home, broke its fin and left it to die at the bottom of the tank. At that point we left Bob alone and for 7 years Bob grew until he was a little bigger than this goldfish at 3:42 in the video. Bob died then we buried Bob the Gluttonous because he would not fit in the toilet. I will never forget that evil demon...

Except information is generalized. Half the frogs shown as Cuban tree frogs were other native species. Except for the pythons all other snake species shown are native to the US. The white snake is a leucistic Texas rat snake. It’s caused by an aberrant gene which is rare in the wild but does happen.

@BAlvn-yr6ej

carp, goldfish, and koi are all pretty much the same species or subspecies...they are all kinds of carp. it's like with dogs, horse, cats...after a few thousand years of breeding, the many colors, body shapes, and sizes, as well as mutations that you see in pet shops, have been bred by people. Carp can get very big given the right conditions...

The goldfish I've seen all have barbells. That's why their muscles were so big. Seriously, Koi are counted as goldfish in most places. It may be technically wrong, but it's one of those things that isn't going to change because, well, they're gold.

there was a lot of misinformation and wrong pictures in this video... the two tht pop out most to me is that goldfish, whether a pet or not, are supposed to be big and live long lives- its their owners poor handling that make them seem a small and easy pet. At 12:03 instead of a picture of a, say, dangerous snake, it showed a ball python, who are famous for being very shy and aren't a huge danger to environments, as they are often unable to defend for themselves.

Also did you know you dont need any specific formation to work in a petshop... I just learn day after day... so i really realize how bad petshop can do nearly whatever the fuck they want. the one where i work was very nice for the care we give during the time we have it. I remember a baby python i was feeding by putting his food in his mouth because he got to much stress and noise around him in the petshop. once he was sell he started to eat by himself because less stress and noise in the house he lives now.

^ it isn't technically a pet, if it's a native species. That implies someone made a pet of a wild animal, and if it's too domesticated, then it's got no natural skills necessary to survive out in its natural environment. So no, it should stay domesticated, or in a zoo I guess. Very unlikely it'd make it in the wilderness.

Do your research on pets before getting them. I do have a problem with Red eared slider turtles because even keeping them as pets require constant maintenance . They shit and piss in the water witch means you will get sick if you don't clean the tank and filter at least once a month or more. When they get to big I would suggest contacting habitats specifically designed to house them. Just passing off some friendly advice.

Dude, I just saw on the news a little while ago. Someone found a baby (human) in the middle of the road out in the middle of no where. Just a few hours old. I mean, damn.. there's a safe surrender site at the local hospital. But they opted to leave the baby in the middle of the street. In Madera CA... People are beyond irresponsible.

We rescued SIX guinea pigs that someone had dumped on the side of the road. One had walked onto the road. When we got out to see what it was we heard squeeling. We looked and there were two more large ones and 3 babies. They were huddled together. So we collected them all and now they live here. Makes me so cranky! They could have given them to a pet shop if they wanted to get rid of them!

__Niko__ domesticated animals aren't suited for the wild. it's called domestication, look it up. as for reptiles and bugs, I agree
@m.d.1836
7 жыл бұрын
Its cruel to native species, and detrimental to the environment. Most of the reptiles and other animals kept today by hobbyists have been bred in captivity as well. Releasing them is irresponsible, and ignorant. That animal does not have natural immunity to what it can encounter in a wild environment, and the wild animals it encounters are not immune to anything the captive bred animal may potentially carry, this is putting aside the possibility for invasive species as well. Cats for example, are a 'domesticated' species but are one of the most destructive feral species in America, and several other countries. People feel they should let their cats outdoors, that they need that space to roam, but don't they live longer when kept indoors? Letting them out exposes them to numerous communicable diseases, predators, cars, cruel people...not to mention a lot of people don't spay/neuter, so the increased amounts of feral populations is immense. They breed nearly as quickly as rabbits, they decimate local wildlife and ecosystems, putting more and more species on the threatened or endangered lists. And P.o.S. pet owners will dump them at farms or in fields and forget about them. Its an epidemic, just like other invasive species, but since they're cats and they're cute, culling them seems cruel to most people. But most of those cats that are dumped in the wild suffer immensely, a lot of them are sickly and starving. And the ones that aren't are killing off natural wildlife. Cats are NOT a native species, its NOT natural for them to be 'free' and in the wild. As owners its our responsibility to care for the animals we keep, and to protect them from harm in any way that we can. But its also our responsibility to care for our ecosystems and make sure our pets are not responsible for its destruction. If you take on the responsibility of the pet, and at any point find yourself unable to care for it, it is your responsibility to find it a home with someone that DOES have that ability. Releasing them is a cop out. It's irresponsible, ignorant, and just plain lazy. You owe more to your animals then abandoning them to fend for themselves, and anyone who does something like that is inhuman and their mother's should have left them in the woods as an infant to fend for themselves.

Cathy Weisel how does anthropomorphizing exotic animals make that animals life better? Dogs and cats have been bred to be human companions. Anything labeled exotic or special pet should never be held in captivity. It's the absolute selfishness of people thinking that they somehow provide a better life for the animal when it's the total opposite. Captivity of any animal that is not domesticated has shown to shorten life and cause disease. I truly don't see how people are so unaware of this. I think most just don't care. "As long as it makes me feel good then that's all that matters". It's so arrogant of humans to believe that they can provide a better living environment than nature.

Pets you shouldn't release into the wild: All of them. Any pet released into the wild will either suffer for a long period until it dies, cause great environmental damage, or even become an invasive species. people need to take responsibility for the animals they chose to take into possession.

Exactly and people also have to research the animals before. Even goldfish require a lot of care and people need to know that BEFORE they buy them. People don’t get that they are living things and you’ve gotta put in to get out. Don’t expect your puppy not to bite you if you’re not gonna train it right.

If you can release something into the wild, it was never a pet. Iguana's are vegan, no meat, if they are being aggressive, something is trying to attack it, or bother eggs. Any reptiles, you can not tame it, you gain it's trust, if you can't accept that you will not dominate them, you will feel pain, especially from the iguana(s)

You should NEVER release ANY animal in the wild. They wont survive and leaving them alone is a death sentence. Pets rely on humans on survival, and thats YOU. Dont get a pet you cannot take care of. If you do, find it a home better than yours.

Gene Burdick A exception that verifies the rule. Some animals in some areas can take care of themselves. Thats: 1: Animals as species: Many pets of species of animals that normally can survive in those conditions, still cannot survive because they have not acquired the necessary survival skills. 2: Some animals: There are those animals that can, but not all. 3: Those animals that can survive on their own, released in the wrong environment, yet again cannot survive. 4: It is the duty of a human to make sure that the animal is released in an environment it is capable of surviving. A vast majority of people are not capable of making an informed decision about it. When scientists release animals, they spend months choosing the site and preparing them for survival. I cannot consider it possible anyone actually seeing enough trouble to do that. So trained professionals blablabla, dont try this at home, OK?
@droneman88
7 жыл бұрын
Ribbitgoesthedog Lastnamehereyeah actually even when scientist have released a species in a specific location it generally backfires. there's always environmental changes brought on by the release that they just didn't think of. There is still a will to survive weither they "acquired the skill or not however, if the environment provides what is needed to survive you have a chance of survival. after all a lizard is still going to know how to hunt, likewise with snakes and fish. I'm not saying every animal can survive being let go, but your making them out to be completely helpless which is not true.
@ribbitgoesthedoglastnamehe4681

Andrew and freinds if you released the frogs in the same pond you caught them, there is likely no harm done. A very clear exception to the rule. If the frogs were moved from another place, and there is a difference that prevents their survival, then their demise is in your hands.
@ribbitgoesthedoglastnamehe4681

I agree. There is no 0% chance in almost any situation, and there is certainly no 100% chance in any situation. However the moral and ethical responsibility of the repercussions remains with the human, even when most humans cannot estimate the situation reliably. It is human nature to grossly overestimate the chances in the situation based, for example, wish to believe nice things. Will to survive and environment are not enough. It does not wipe away the human responsibility. Also I am NOT making them completely helpless, and I resent such a claim which misrepresents my words and personality. Dont do that. What I am saying is: 1: Human is responsible for the humans actions, not the animal. 2: It is not a question whether the animal has a this or that % chance. It is a question whether the human has a right, after taking the duty of caring for the animal, to force the animal to take the chance. 3: In many situations, the animal CAN survive. However this outcome does not affect the human responsibility. 4: In some cases, some people are still going to release an animal. They should know that it is a bad idea and they should not do that. If they still choose to continue, they should do the work themselves, of reasoning whether or not the environment is providing a fair chance of survival and whether the animal is capable of utilizing those chances. There is no carte blanche to do whatever you wish to whomever you wish at any time you wish. And especially laziness and desire for comfort is not an excuse. 5: Rules cannot ever be left to be judged case-by case on the spot. Or like they say, "dont pee in the cattle fence." People do that anyway, and while they dont get punished by law for that rule, the consequences still exist, and they are almost never good.

Just so you know, the air port in Washington Virginia release every turtle or exotic animal into a pond if a traveler decides to bring their pet on the flight with them. I was not aware that turtles were not allowed on flight and they took mine away from me. I was distraught through the whole flight and they told me they released it into a pond near by. It was a baby slider turtle. New born. I told them during the conflict that it was going to stay inside my gift bag so it didn't disturb any one on flight. They were "concerned" about getting some disease which you can only get by "touching" a contaminated species. It didn't matter what I said to them they wanted to take it away anyways. I had approached my area before security and asked them if my turtle was allowed before entering. They allowed me through the gate with my turtle. The only person who had a problem was the captain himself. If you have intentions of bringing a pet home do not take it to am air port. They will either kill it or let it go and come up with any excuse they can to calm you down. So it's not just your every day person. It's professional businesses to for the dumbest reasons. I just hope my turtle is ok. And I feel bad for setting him have to go.

oh sweetheart you are a special little snowflake. Animals are not allowed on planes unless they are approved assistance companions (ie seeing eye dogs). It's unhydenic to have animals in such close quarters with food service and they can carry diseases to other animals in the new area, whether you know it or not. Not to mention it's cruel to shove a turtle in a handbag and not nice for an animal to be subject to the changing pressure in a cabin. Plus cabins are cold and turtles like warm. As a general rule, do not put an animal on a plane unless it has to happen. Animals do not like planes. Clearly you really don't care about your animal if you think it's appropriate. Never travel in Australia or New Zealand. You won't make it. You can't even carry an apple interstate to prevent disease spreading.

I use to date a girl who had over 80 different pets in various, cages, aquariums, and tanks. Not only did I discover this girl had some serious Fucking issues (after 5 years unfortunately), but that she saw nothing wrong with keeping these animals in confined spaces that didn't even slightly resemble their native habitat. Domesticated animals such as dogs and cats have been bred to be pets, much unlike all the "exotic" animals. I never understood the selfishness, and arrogance one must have to think that they are doing a good thing by keeping these animals in what basically amounts to slavery. It's a complete one sided relationship. The human has their emotional hole filled with the feelings of bonding and love by anthropomorphizing the animals. Yet these animals don't feel that. I think pet ownership should be extremely limited. Definitely making it illegal to own any type of animal that has not been bred exclusively for domestication. Then we wouldn't have these problems. But people are Fucking selfish and anything that makes them feel special they will seek out to own, no matter if it's another living creature.

We broke up a decade ago but I recently caught up with her and found out she is now a pet sitter. Where people drop off their dogs to her. She completely neglects these dogs by keeping them in a cage most of the time, then takes them in the back yard and takes a few quick pics of her throwing a ball for them to send to the owners before they go back in cage. It's all a front come to find out so that she can have a front for her illegal marijuana dealing. I quickly got out of there once I saw what was going on. she's a pretty disgusting human being.

My EXACT opinion. Why do people have to own foxes, hedgehogs, tigers, snakes, parrots? And then they say dumb stuff like: "Oh they would not survive as long in the wild, get sick or be hungry a lot. They were bred in captivity, so they don't miss the wild." That makes me so furious! Of course they miss their natural habitat! They miss hunting, flying, being with herds/flocks of others of their kind. Even if they were born in captivity doesnt mean they dont have the instincts. Thats why we domesticate animals over hundreds of years, so they lose these instincts. that doesnt happen because you just raise one generation in your dinky, shitty little apartement. Pure fact is: Wild animals dont love you the way you want them to. You are not one of their kind and they have no use for you. You are being selfish so let wild animals stay in the wild.

Unfortunately due to the destructive habits of people around the world captive pets may very well save a species or two. And in some cases has already helped bring back species from extinction. I am a nature enthusiast and I am all for responsible pet ownership. The keyword being responsible. Most people cannot properly care for a pet rock. Don't fool yourself into thinking you're the 1 in a million who's capable of raising any creature you decide you like at the moment. If you're entire knowledge of the process came from the internet 10 minutes before you got the animal, do yourself and the animal a favor and take it to an expert. You should always get in contact with an expert before hand and learn about the hardships, not the joys, of whatever pet you're adopting. I will sell you a how to guide on pet rocks to get you started. Featuring a bonus section on tricks and behavioral training. $0 value, yours for only $29.99
