I love people who help others because they are kind! This is someone who helps a person and expects nothing in return. We should all strive to be like this. Too many people now have "Bystander syndrome", they see the bad thing happening to someone but they do nothing because they expect someone else to step up.

Once upon a time, there was Mary. Mary went through my garbage, went into my room emery time I left the house, texted me with messages informing me I hadn't made my bed or left something out in my personal bathroom, and so much more. Things finally came to a head when she called the police because I had my window open after it had rained and was enjoying the cool breeze. She kicked in the door like the cops and screamed at me about ruining her house. I demanded she leave, she refused and after I tell her I have a security camera that had all her shenanigans recorded, she called the police. She literally thought they were going to tote me out in handcuffs. Instead I slapped her with a trespassing charge. She was downstairs crying at the cops about how this is her house and how is that legal. The cops are like, she's a tenant, not a guest, you have no right to enter her living space without permission or 25 hrs notice. And even with notice, they're had to be a legitimate reason like repairs or concern for flooding or other emergencies.

good for you! renting a room is a hell worse than a whole house if the landlord lives there too. i know, ive done it and once my hubby and i bought our own space, we rented out our extra rooms, to friends in need for "short term". one of those short terms turned into 9 years, another was supposed to be a couple who came to stay for 2 weeks while their new apartment was being made up for them to move in, 17 months later, and an addition of a 15 year old teenage male, against our wishes, but i mean, his kid got thrown out, we werent going to leave the boy stranded. another, 3 years, another 5 years and counting. none paid rent. and we STILLLLLLL NEVER once entered their space without knocking, or at least texting asking if it was ok, and it was never ever to check on them, they were our friends, wed go hang out, talk, play video games, feed each others pets, etc. still..... its hard when things go south.

She would call me randomly every 2-3 weeks and ask if their was anything she needed to repair and she only entered 2-3 times when I wasn’t home but after giving me at least a day or two’s notice. It took me about a week to drum up the courage to give her my 30 days notice. We still talk on the phone every once in awhile and I could drop by her house and talk anytime I want to. My landlord took complete advantage of me being a first-time renter. He told me he was legally allowed to have a key to the apartment (which he can't in Belgium). Changed the locks after he called me at 2AM and then suddenly walked into my apartment a couple of times while I was home. As a woman alone, this was scary af. When I left the apartment, he and his wife came to do a check if everything was alright, changed the locks again. Generally speaking, yeah. Assuming it's in the US, at any rate. Japan for example, landlords are notoriously prejudice against foreign potential renters, and will ask ahead of time why you need so many rooms for, what you plan to do I each, etc etc. Even then I'm sure there's some places here in the states where they try the "religious liberties" loophole to not have to serve those of other religions or LGBT. Either way, it's likely not to be worth staying there if there's any other options since the landlord like that is apt to be petty as heck and constantly messing with you.

@@wardenm North American and Western European countries uniformly prohibit religious discrimination in housing. @@wardenm it really ties into each religion and the climate that nurtured that religion. You bring up a good point about Japan, it seems bizarre and close-minded that they would have so many restrictions against foreign renters, but they usually do that because they need to protect the spiritual energy of their household. It's a coin toss that a Japanese landlord will be either Shinto or Buddhist - the Buddhists are slightly more chill, but Shinto believe that a person is good or evil not by their choice but by the type of spirits surrounding them. Locals are usually also either Shinto or Buddhist who are aware and respect the spiritual energy of their landlords' household, but they never know what sort of spirits will follow a foreigner into their home. As for the states, shooooooooot, I ain't touching that hot dumpster fire.

I am so glad she included the last video! It proves that we're not all awful. I'm a landlord (hubby and I worked hard and sacrificed a lot over many years to get the houses we rent out). During Covid, I contacted our tenants to let them know that, if they ran into difficulty, just to call and we'd sort something. We certainly weren't going to make them homeless. We also try in all interactions to be respectful, courteous and understanding, and I strongly believe that's why we never have problems with our tenants. Our shortest term tenant has rented from us for 11 years. It's also important to note that you should never judge a book by it's cover. One month the rent was late fro m one family (which was really out of character). I gave the tenants a call to check that they were OK first and foremost, and they asked me to pop round for a chat. I did and, when the door was opened, one of my tenants had clearly just had her nails and hair done. Her daughter had passed away and the beauty treatments were a gift from the family to help her feel "presentable" at the funeral. If I'd lost it and judged her for "spending on her appearance" while owing rent, I would have kicked her while she was down, in the worst possible way. Sometimes things are not as they seem. They had a funeral to pay for, and we had a little spare cash at the time, so we told them not to worry about the rent that month and the following month, so they could concentrate on laying their daughter to rest and on taking some time to grieve. We sent flowers, attended the funeral (at their request) and did what we could to ensure they were OK. Being a *real* landlord is far, far more than just being a rent collector. Some people let the power go to their heads and forget that respect is a two way street. Our tenants take immaculate care of our houses, which I doubt they would bother doing if we didn't show them respect, too.

When I was a kid we lived in an apartment complex where the driveway was completely open to the street so anyone can walk in. They would break into the tenants' cars and steal their stuff and/or the cars. This was in the 80s in a not so great neighborhood and there were no cameras. Apparently the tenants signed a petition requesting management to put up a gate in the driveway to protect the carport. Management refused because it would cost too much money. I was 7 years old when this horrible situation happened. My friend and I were swimming in the pool in the middle of the day and one of the tenants, a nice lady who was a nurse, came home and was getting her keys from her purse to unlock the security door that leads into the complex. Two guys approached her and we watched as they shot and stabbed her. I don't know if we made a sound or if they saw us out of the corner of their eye but they turned to look straight at us. We ducked into the water and swam out of view. My friend's dad was there but had to go past the door to get to their apartment to call 911. We didn't know if those guys were going to come in because they had the keys now. They didn't and 911 was called. I'm not sure if she survived but her family moved her out within a couple of days. After that happened, the owners put up the gate to the driveway. It's ridiculous that it took this woman getting shot and stabbed for the owners to put up the gate. And since they put it up pretty quick after that, it's safe to say that they had the money after all. The fact that they put people's lives in jeopardy because they're cheap is beyond f-ed up.

She’s never in our space unwanted either. Like, when something big needs fixed, like when the ceiling in our kitchen started caving in, she came in with her son to look at it so she could see it for herself, and we talked while he assessed if he could fix it himself or not (he couldn’t), but she never just barges in. This makes me appreciate my landlord so much. He has quite a few properties in my village so a fair few renters. He has his own plumbers and handymen that I can call at any time if I need them. I contracted meningitis 10 years ago and as a result I was in hospital and my mum moved into my house to look after my daughter as a result, I literally couldn’t send the rent for maybe 3 months. My mum must have spoken to him and told him what was going on. The whole village knew how ill I was. When I managed to call him I told him that I would back pay the rent as I wasn’t working due to being so ill and bedbound and in hospital, I said that I would add extra on each month to clear the debt. He told me not to worry about it at all and to concentrate on getting better and getting back to work. Eventually I had to give up work because it triggered Fibromyalgia and ME. I have ended up having to claim benefits and pay my rent that way. I told him straight away and again he was lovely, he said he’s not bothered that I’m on benefits, as long as the rent is paid he doesn’t care. He also has never put the rent up ever. It’s stayed the same since moving in. As a result I’ve lived in 3 of his houses in the village eventually moving to a larger one that I can still afford with my benefits. I am so so lucky and grateful that he is so good. It makes me sad that there are so many others that are so bad and nasty and manipulative and just out for what they can get. Xx

**So, about the nails in the tires situation** I left my ex-husband back in 2016 & moved in with my mom in Missouri. My ex had told me while we were separated that he'd be willing to move to MO but, I told him it was too late that we needed to move on. This was like 6 months after we had been spereated, both knowing we were getting divorced. Mind you he had told me he would never move out of Arkansas knowing my mother wasn't in good health at the time. We had been apart for a whole year & during that time my mother & I both noticed him driving by the house. For a whole year he was driving by, throwing nails in our driveway. The guys at the tire shop got to know me by name real quick. I was going so often that I knew to go ahead & pull into one of the open spots so they could get started, already knowing that I needed a tire plugged or a brand new tire. I had more than enough. One day I was on my way to work (which I had to drive an hour to since I was still working in Arkansas) and I recognized a truck coming my way. When I could clearly see my ex husband in the driver's seat with his new wife, who he moved to MO for, was in the passenger seat, I layed on my horn & I smiled & waved. I wanted him to have to explain to her why he was coming down my road which is way out of they way for them to get home & even explain who i am. He did way more shittier things thru the divorce like when people would ask what happened he'd tell people I was on drugs... He didn't want people to think it was at all his fault, tho he had been cheating on me even flaunting it in front of his family. I doubt he will ever see this but if he does, Dustin you're on of the lowest people I've ever met & your new wife looks like a pug mated with a troll. 👌

Regardless of the reason someone owns a book, a landlord obviously has no right to get angry and kick someone out over it. That being said, that particular book is Paganism: An Introduction to Earth-Centered Religions by Joyce & River Higginbotham. I recognized it right away because I have a copy I lent to my mom when I wanted her to understand me a little better. That's one of the reasons the book was written; to offer insight about Paganism to non-Pagan family and friends if they want to understand why someone close to them is a Pagan. So it could easily be that the tenant in the video only has that book because someone else asked them to read it. The same could be true for absolutely anything else in a tenant's posession. It could be something that was given to them by someone else, and here the landlord has decided to just blow up in anger. It's actually pretty pathetic when someone is so fearful and close-minded about anything they don't understand that they would lash out in anger over it.

Man Ive had some insane landlords. One who knew there were bedbugs and did nothing. Then when I found after we were covered in bites, including my new born daughter and in EVERYTHING we owned (all new furniture as a brand new start) and brought it to him he simply handed me a spray bottle of Lysol and called it a day.. it ruined everything I owned, killed my cat and had to take a law suit to resolve it. It also ended in a class action suit and the building ended up being demolished after it was appropriately treated and caused the slum Lord to go bankrupt. He had to treat the building and had to sell to pay off all the judgements. Whoever bought it ended demolishing and putting in a new beautiful building. Too many details to share here, but man it was 2 years of absolute hell!!

As someone who's finding it really hard and basically terrifying to get out there and rent a place, hearing about all the horrendous landlords out there has me terrified to even try. Even if it passes through her head like "yo wassup you chose lashes over rent?" I don't personally wear make-up or do myself up like that, but I'm sure there are other things I spend money on that people think are just as unfrugal, but like... as a business interaction relationship, its not their business, and I just really appreciate that she keeps that boundary and that there are people out there who would.

My first apartment was horrible. The owner showed the place stating he would paint the entire place and put the appliances in by the time I was to move in. He did not. I had to wait for a week and he still had not. He attempted to offer that he would come in and paint the place after I moved in. I said I would not trust my handmade and antique furniture with someone I did not know. My grandpa made a lot of the furniture out of solid oak and cherry. He attempted to sell the idea that he would allow me to paint the place myself. I was desperate to move out so I agreed. He did not install any of the appliances for over two weeks. And there was a leak from the apartment above that I found out later: a toilet leaking into my bathroom onto all my stuff. Nice what an arse. I deducted my time and cost for the paint from the first month's rent because I was not going to do all that work for nothing. :) This man would constantly come into my apartment without any notice. So, I had two very friendly American Bobtail kittens that would greet everyone. My cats unfortunately had gotten ringworm before I picked them up. They had it really bad and I had to have them shaved. Well, I decided to teach my landlord a lesson. The next time he informed me that he was in my apartment without telling me I asked if he had touched my cats or anything in the apartment. I proceeded to act very concernedly and stated that they were highly contagious. I hoped he hadn't touched them or anything in the apartment since he probably would get ringworm. I told him I had it because of the kittens. Guess what, he never came back to my apartment again without telling me ahead of time again. 😂

OK equal time for landlords. I had to rent my townhouse because I couldn't afford to sell at a loss and had to pay two mortgages. She pretended she would buy it (very long story with fake paperwork over months) when I told her I had to sell my place, finally had to take her to court after refusing her rent checks because she would not move out (at the court she said it was her house and had a neighbor as support for some reason who was probably told how awful we were for forcing her to move). When the lawyer and cops were there to make her move out because we were not in the state she stripped the place of carpet, stuff she had built in so all the walls had holes, basically everything was stripped and I had the fun cost of repairs, and no rent for the three months. I had never increased her rent because she said she would make repairs like to the fence so I provided the money. She took the money for the repairs. I would never rent under any circumstances because I have talked to people who had the house completely trashed and I had left fridge, washer, dryer, microwave, etc. when you cannot rent in LA with a fridge provided which meant buying one in a hurry when I moved there. Appliances were destroyed or stolen. Who in their right mind would be willing to take those losses by renting. I laugh when they talk about investment real estate. @@Just1Nora Yesssss! Your comment deserves ALL of the love. Honestly. I've been exactly where you're talking about. Being judged in the checkout line for buying a steak ONE TIME with my food stamps instead of chuck. It was my daughter's birthday, and I wanted it to feel "fancy" (even though we were absolutely having the dented cans of mystery vegetables on the side). I went so far as to avoid wearing even my cheap-ass Walmart jewelry (the kind that turns your skin green) when I went to the store so I wouldn't get nasty looks from Karens (and this was back in 2007). And yes, even when I was poor AF, I would sometimes splurge on a new toy for my baby or even a set of $10 press-on nails so I could feel confident for a job interview. Thank you for putting into words so beautifully what so many of us experience quietly. I hope you and yours are well!

@@KaraPeters You know what I thought when I was a cashier and I saw people use their SNAP benefits to buy a steak? "Damn I could go for a big fat juicy steak right now." That was it. That was all. Just like anyone else buying good looking food, I would usually talk to them about dinner and how it looked good and such. I'd suggest spice combos sometimes (dollar tree even has some good ones). Never once did I get mad about the steak (except for mild jealousy that I wasn't having one for dinner. Damn, now I'm hungry).
