Excellent performance by Petula Clark! The very pretty and extremely talented singer, actress, dancer, entertainer, pianist, and songwriter Petula Clark was a child and teenage star in England! Then her song Downtown hit number 1 here in the United States! She received the Grammy Award and her career soared with more hit songs, guest spots on many television shows, radio, her own television show, more big screen movies and many stage productions of Classic Musicals! I was born in 1978 here in the United States. I have always been and always will be a fan of Petula Clark! It should be Dame Petula Clark! Thank you for posting and sharing this classic performance!

I saw her perform this and she was fabulous. She was nearly 70 at the time. I doubt many could put on a performance this good at that age. She was much better than Glen Close! Plus she was constantly going up and down that huge staircase in those heavy sequined costumes... probably has thighs of steel from that tour.

Wow.. what poison on here about Dear Pet... I was expecting to see Petula Clark when I was in London in 1996. I had seen Glenn Close and Betty Buckley and was excited to see Ms. Clark.. The tour guide on the boat to Greenwich announced as we sailed past her flat, that she was on Holiday!!! I was gutted.. But got to see Rita Moreno, instead. Im so glad you posted this video though, cause I wanted to see/hear Pet do it. Rita was FABULOUS. A great mix of girlish timidity and resentful star!!!

I saw Petula Clark as Norma Demond in the NJPAC production of "Sunset Boulevard" in Newark, NJ several years ago. Singers such as Patti LuPone, Elaine Page, and Betty Buckley can belt this song to the rafters; singers such as Petula Clark, Glenn Close, and others - who sing well, but don't have the same soaring octave range or decibel volume - bring the character to life through their stage mannerisms, pauses, hand movement, inflections - and voice. I think this was a wonderful interpretation!

Someone said the band looked scared - actually one of the guitarists over her shoulder looks close to tears at the end . Probably because he is so moved. The nice thing about Petula is she never cheats in this - she takes the character and the music head on - there may be the odd rough patch in her singing ( Glenn Close who i adore in the role also had rough singing moments) , but even that seems to be part of the characterization. She goes beyond the notes and words to become Norma Desmond.

Each Norma found a way to make the role work for them. When Petula ran her fingers through Joe's hair and said "Now come to bed, Darling", she was the only one to create the same wince amongst the audience that Swanson did in 1950. In an age of the 50 year old "Goldie Hawn" generation of beauties, we have lost that...

I really felt we got to know Norma in this performance..and I feel this is very important as rather than being a rather impersonal bel canto show piece this is in fact the first time the audience meet Norma. Please dont misunderstand me I do admire Close's work..but I feel undue criticism has been leveled at ms Clarke.

Petula made her Norma work because when she ran her fingers through Joe Gillis hair and said "and now it's time for bed" or when asked how old Salome was, she replied "16", you knew you were dealing with someone who was dangerously insane.

I give Ms Clark an A for effort for her Norma; my late partner and l saw LuPone the opening week, Buckley a year later with Barrowman, and in January of 95, most daring, risk-taking, beautifully acted and sung Norma, Elaine Paige. Later on, seeing Close and finally Clark, l enjoyed both, but Clark is no actress.

I found the way ms Clarke sung spoke the role to be infinately more satisfying and indeed realisic than Close's wildly fluctuating tone quality and poorly disguised passing from chest to head voice. ms Clarke knew she couldnt do a big sing and so as a total professional took a different approach and succeeded marvelously..
