Knowing how to SING a song is not just about saying the words or belting them out as loudly as possible. Pop singers today seem to have forgotten that. Petula Clark could teach them a thing or two or three. This version is awesome, and I say that as a fan of the Dusty version too!

I would say that Petula's perfect diction and crystal clear vocals are sufficient to say that she as done it once again. Petula is magnificent at finding classic songs and then putting her own spin on them and then making them her own. It must be the brilliant actress she iscoming out. She sings this song perfectly just like she does with other songs she as recorded such as "Homeward Bound" and "Fool On The Hill." She is incredibly inventive with how, through her expert knowledge, she knows with pin point accuratecy how she wants to put across a song to her fans and the audience. I have never seen such spendid results from anybody else but Petula. It is a uniqueness she as all to herself. And it is us her fans who are in receipt of the rewards.

If people want to know what makes a great singer, analyze Petula Clark. She has everything and then some. You're right. Many if not most singers today think screaming, twerking, and occasionally hitting a reasonably sound note is more than enough.

For those who are interested, this is better than La Streisand's version. Why? The tempo alone, as it's moving, moving, moving relentlessly like a windmill. Her voice is compelling (as always-- a real voice).and her diction is impeccable, as it must be moving at this tempo. A really fine, fine job.

Was it something that I said? Lovers walk along a shore And leave their footprints in the sand Is the sound of distant drumming Just the fingers of your hand? Pictures hanging in a hallway And the fragment of a song Half-remembered names and faces But to whom do they belong? When you knew that it was over In the autumn of goodbyes For a moment you could not recall The colour of his eyes Like a circle in a spiral Like a wheel within a wheel Never ending or beginning On an ever-spinning reel As the images unwind Like the circles that you find In the windmills of your mind

This is exactly how this song shouldn’t be sung. It’s so weird to hear different singers try to put their own stamp on it by messing with the rhythm....and by doing that, they totally ruin the harried nature of the lyrics, meant to convey crowded confusion in someone’s mind. Just as the title instructs. Then, of course, they all open their throttles and start belting at some point, which also ruins it! Noel Harrison “got it” right, in my opinion, bc he evokes the mood the song is trying to convey. There isn’t even a stop or musical break at the end of the verses, they go spinning one into another, and another, exactly as intense emotions spin in our heads when something important ends, and we wonder what happened. And that’s the magic of this song: spinning smoothly, no syncopation, no breaks, no rubato, nothing imposed, anywhere. It is what it is, simple, a bit harried, soft, no big production. Not like this!

I think this was the version I was trying to remember. I very vaguely remember this being on the radio when I was little, but it wasn’t the hesitant version of Noel Harrison (I think that was his name) or the more fluid Dusty Springfield cover... it was a woman singing it and it adhered more to the spiraling musical structure which really brought out the slightly manic tone of the song as a whole. It’s nervous breakdown music... or something you listen to in order to prevent one.

Petula Clark's singing style is rather folkish and meandering kind of angst. At least it is rather faithful to the original version - Dusty's arrangement is slowed down to a rather punkish kind of angst after some mishaps over how the Memphis band would play such a foreign piece by Michel Legrand.
