The original head unit may well have sounded ok with the other upgrades. I think I’d have stayed with the original. Also I’d have gone with an under seat sub or none at all. That’s just me of course. Those seats are such an improvement👍🏻

I didnt think to show you the sound system in the Saab while you were reviewing it. As well as the high end Atoto A6 Pro PRB head unit, it has 6 Focal speakers ranging from 4" in the dash, 6.5" in the doors, and 6x9 in the rear. Along with 2x 12" subs in the rear hatch. All power by 2 old school early 90's Alpine V12 amps. For a total of 620 watts RMS. It sounds awesome. I can turn it up to max volume as far as it will go and there is no distortion. Measures at 111db, which basically hurts at that level. I sure we will catch up again soon, will demo then.

Putting a modern, single din head unit in a car of this age is a great value upgrade. Think I paid £90 for a Pioneer mechless unit. I don't miss CDs! With Bluetooth and an Android phone, I can operate music (Spotify), nav (Google maps) and phone calls by voice control. Works a treat! The tech connectivity was the only feature I wanted from a modern car and this cheap head unit did the trick.

Ah the pleasures of owning cars you love. Like boats they are a never ending hole in which to pour money. I have mentioned on one of your videos previously some of the cars I have and included is my much loved but costly 205GTi and Golf GTi Mk1. These cars of course are no longer daily drivers but I do use them all but there is always something that needs to be repaired or replaced. Thank goodness there are those amongst us who care about cars and not the potential increase in value.

my 309GRi used to cut out whenever the revs dipped and at the time (1997ish) I read a supplement with my husbands Max Power or my Revs magazine which was giving advice to someone with a 205 1.6GTi with the same issue and they said to remove the air screw and clean it as it gets gunked up and put it back. i'm not 100% sure what the 'air screw' was but my husband knew and went straight to it and solved the issue every time. Every time it got grotty, i'd have trouble keeping any revs on it. Very frustrating!

If you want something for high days and holidays though, then it had to be the 205. That’s what I’ve gone with. Do you miss Pepe then or not? Just a thought on the engine revs dropping out. Have you checked the throttle body for air leaks? On my XU9J4 engine, the spindle for one of the butterflies had some play in it, so air could leak out through the hole the spindle went through. This gave all sorts of idle problems, so might worth a quick look.

Sound is really controversial and subjective topic. As I generally tend to get more luxury cars and usually with upgraded stereo I generally ten to think "not much is needed", but sure... older entry level cars could have really horrible stereo and even replacing the components for the same size could completely transform the car. What I would have done differently is purely subjective, but I would have fitted Blaupunkt Classic head unit (they are pricey, but they look right - see Bremen), would have skipped the dedicated amp (4x50RMS to be honest is enough in my opinion if we trying just to modernise and not to turn it into chav rocket) and for sub... I would have went for under-seat active subs. I just hate separate sub-boxes in the boot... kind of shouts 90s to me. With under-seat sub you don't need much power as the sub is just in perfect place for where it should be and I think the balance of the system would be better. Again I am not criticising what the guys recommended off the shelf as everything was pretty reasonable, but just few petty things... like I don't think external amp was really required if the goal was just to modernise and massive active sub in the boot isn't my cuppa either. But it may as well be what you desired, as well hard to judge without being able to listen... maybe I would change my mind!
