We had two 504s in our family. The last one was in mint condition. Sold it to a young Brisbane doctor around 2010 for 5k who was a great fan of the 504s and wasn't t expecting to find one in such great condition.

The 405 SRDT was a fabulous car. I drove thru a 600mm deep creek about 40 metres wide without an issue. A little bit of water in the rear passenger floorwell. The other 3 no water at all. I've owned 14 Pugs. 504 TI I converted to manual. Magnificent car. I had a 306 XSi which was really good. Also a 307 180 Sport with its close ratio rally box was an insane car and has only had the clutch replaced near 200,000kms. 404 Sedan, 404 Ute, 404 SW, 3 504s, 5 505s Sedans and one SW. A 306 XSi, 307 180 Sport. Great cars. Standard 306s and 307s were where the rot set in.

I can identify with the comments from these two guys about the Peugeot 504 because I owned 6 Peugeots over the years , two being 504s. My first was a new manual 504 GL in Flamingo Red which was a lovely car and very reliable over 6 years. It suffered from rust in the sills and shortly after buying it I had Endrust (remember them) treatment done to the car to stop any rust forming but after Endrust drilled holes in the sills to inject some product, that's where it rusted! They did fix it though under their warranty and it didn't rust there again. After two 504s, two 505s,405 Mi16, 406 I then changed to BMWs. Peugeot were still making great cars with the 306 hatch, 205 GTI, 405 and even the 406 had shades of 504 about it but when Peugeot started concentrating on the lower end of the market, particularly in the UK, they started to lose the plot. Who can forget Jeremy Clarkson's rant on Top Gear with the 307, 407 - that must have affected sales enormously. They seem to be making good cars now but the prices have skyrocketed. I think it has been a difficult transition for Peugeot to go from the 307/407 era to today where EVs and PHEV are now the main course.

The last iconic Peugeot. Glad we had 2 of them in the 70s and they were fantastic cars. We also had an assembly plant here in South Africa until the 1980s. Now all Peugeots are imported here but sadly less reliable.

As opposed to one of the below comments, interesting clip fellow's, my sister's first car, in about 1985 and Dad who hated Peugots with a passion, finally had to admit, the suspension and brakes were terrific, the feature of the car, as he put it, Nanna & Pa had a 404 for many years and it gave them terrific service for a long time. I take it, that's not Nanna driving at 0.52 in your article....haaa haa, thanks for the story.

@@chrispbacon3042 Contemporary crash tests showed unfavourable outcomes for occupants at relatively low speeds. Probably as safe as a lot of other cars, but the apparent lack of any real passive safety is a concern for me.

Peak Peugeot. All models since have been a terrible disappointment. Except 205 of course. It was as if they gave up and just tried to compete with Nissan after 1981.
