A property manager asked me to go fire up a water tank because a tenant was complaining that they had no hot water in their bathroom even though they had hot water in their kitchen. This fact led my to suspect someone had ran the PEX line incorrectly from the water tanks so that the tank that was off was not providing hot water at all. I discovered that the water tank of that tenant was feeding the hot water for the tenants who did not get their gas tank turned on. In other words, the tenants did not turn gas on because they were enjoying free hot water at the expense of the other tenant's water tank that was on. In order to rectify the situation, I switched the PEX lines at two places so that the hot water would flow to the tenant's bathroom from her water tank that is she paying for. After I did this, I hooked up the PEX lines from the water tank of the other tenant whose gas was off. At this point, the other tenant would now NOT be enjoying any free hot water until they get their gas on. I would say that would be a surprise the next morning and then they will probably complain but the property manager knows to tell them to get their gas on and they will have hot water. It was simply a matter of cutting the lines and reconnecting them so the hot water from the tank that is on goes to the right tenant who is paying for the gas. I successfully reversed all the lines so the tenant with gas now enjoys hot water in the kitchen and bathroom.
