This coulda been done way more metaphysically. The darkside would make you unable to approach death sticks feeling immense anxiety and self doubt from your addiction, but the impulse would still be there, you'd begin to hate yourself, but hate the death sticks more, maybe become some terrible Truth commercial shit over them and do more smuggler shit just to be in a position to punish smokers. The light side of the force would relieve you of these materialistic needs, but in doing so perhaps you become more alienated from your old smuggling buddies, you just find you don't have shit in common with them anymore, and maybe they were holding you back, but you as a person would have to grow beyond that. The Force can't make your choices for you.

I remember for the two Star Wars RPGs I was in i always played as. Troglodyte Soldier/Pilot. Was a good thing to because no one else ever took any type of heavy weapons proficiency or even able to pilot a ship. So I was basically the crew’s captain in a way because I was literally the only one able to fly the ships we had and surprisingly I was also the only one that properly knew how to use the weapons on our ship to actually be able to defend ourselves and actually hit anything. Drove me nutz. Lucky we were always able to hire an NPC or I was able to train someone’s character on how to fly the ships and use its weapons. And what’s worse is we had a mechanic to but he had no skills in piloting or using the weapons he would make for us. Like wtf. Who the hell has a mechanic/blacksmith that doesn’t at least have a basic knowledge of how to use the weapons he/she is making.

As a smoker who has had 2 PC's die by them for ironic reasons your point is kinda invalid. Biggest reason is the connection to the smoking habit when i ask a GM if my character can have some. This is my go to solution for a character i'm tired of having but is needed for the party. If i can't have fun with my PC then i'll have fun killing em. One needs to find the funny thing in life in the most tragic of situations... ;)

Push and Pull small objects only 10 meters away and one from the book. I chose technokinesis, use the force to see how machines/technology works (I think this one was a house rule, The DM has done may SW campaigns ) I never knew I had this ability till I touched a smugglers ship and snuck on board wanting to throw my life away because I was banished. Quite obvious. Seriously, wtf is up with that GM. I live for the kinds of antics that result from a "sub-optimal" build... like a ranger who's natural enemy is rabbits, AND a 50/50 chance whether he attacks immediately or immediately runs away from them... with numbers playing some dubious effect, because obviously, one against a hundred (even rabbits) isn't exactly a smart fight to get involved in. ...OR a gnome trying to become a Paladin in a world where only Humans are allowed. (2e)... ...OR the half-orc trying to be a Bard (of all things)... AND it's not just for hilarity. Some really GREAT moments were had because of those Characters and restrictions... The struggle puts "heart" into the game, and should never be dissuaded. GM's that don't appreciate a Player taking the initiative for Purely RP purposes shouldn't complain when they either run out of Players who still return to the Game, OR when everyone turns into a PowerGamer. ;o)

Nothing that makes you unable to actually fight or talk. Regarding addictions: not everyone wants to go clean. Death Sticks are like cigarettes or joints at most. The GM just proved he is a bad GM because he is unable to cope with an in game mechanic that was given to a pre-gen character, the fact that the only one who had an actual problem with it was the GM makes it even more ridiculous, because as a GM your job is to create the story, you do NOT in ANY way dictate what a player character does/has in regards to personality quirks like addictions. Wow, you had a shit DM. If he wanted you to get rid of them so badly he could’ve A) Send you to an area in which they weren’t allowed (and you can’t smuggle them in) for a prolonged period of time thus forcing you to deal with the addiction, and perhaps get over it B) Say you built up a tolerance to them C) just, y’know... _talked_ to you? D) Let you make bad decisions and let the party suffer for it? I mean, I guess he wanted you guys to win difficult battles, and your addiction made it hard to difficulty scale, but as a DM you have to care more about the players role playing and having fun than them following your perfect story. Dude took away the only interesting part of your character that _you_ made so that he wouldn’t have to think quite as hard or lose his perfect narrative.

@Jhakaro

John Vanderson What is it with gamers and this juvenile reaction. I see it all the time. Similar posts as yours, even within my own groups before. If you have a problem with what a player or gm does, say it to them out of the game and raise the concern respectfully and maturely. If multiple people have the same problem, then make sure the gm or player knows everyone's thoughts, otherwise they might just think it's you that has a problem and won't change because "four out of five people don't seem to mind." If the offender keeps doing it, raise the concern again, give a friendly reminder and if in the end, they just won't stop doing whatever it is you or the others don't agree with or respond badly to your well intentioned and kind feedback with stuff like "I'll do what I want" etc. then kick them out or leave and find another group. Give them warnings. Let them know what will happen if they keep it up. Acting like a petulant child to spite the GM or another player for that matter (going after them, fucking them over etc.) because they wronged you somehow with their actions isn't acting like a petulant child, you're being a petulant child. Sometimes people don't know why you're angry or why you feel it's a problem or don't realise that they did anything undesirable or wrong. They won't learn anything or be given a chance to be better if you start acting like an idiot to spite them and make life more difficult for them. You're just going to find the game frustrating and annoying and in you acting out the gm and other players will get frustrated and angry and annoyed and then the whole group essentially implodes on itself. It's literally the most stupid way to deal with a problem. Talk to people if there's an issue. If they repeat again once or twice, mention it again. If it doesn't stop, leave or boot them if majority agrees. It's that simple.

Hey man, that's cool. Sorry if it came off too harsh. I've just seen this type of rhetoric a lot when it comes to problems at gaming tables, even amongst 30 to 40 year olds and everything and it just makes the situation so much worse. Every one ends up angry and annoyed with one another and no one ever learns anything or how to be better next time because no one tried to let their problems be known. I can understand the frustration if you consistently get bad dm's or players and I'm shocked to be honest to see how many bad stories are out there about players or dm's being dicks but if you start meeting bad behaviour or etiquette with more bad behaviour or etiquette out of spite, it'll only inflate the problem and end up wasting your time, the dm's and everyone else's too in the end. Just not worth it.

My DM tried doing that with my Bard's alcoholism, he literally threw the party into another plane of existence for 5 sessions in which alcohol was non-existent, he forgot the fact that in the very 1st session of the entire campaign I had stolen a infinitely refilling flask of dwarven rum, I introduced alcohol to the plane and when he panicked trying to find a way to get rid of it without abusing his authority (he was a very fair DM, if he wasn't trying to railroad the party to a predetermined outcome he let us make our own choices), he couldn't and later he had the ruler of the alternate plane offer a boon for each party member in exchange for the flask. The Barbarian chose an axe that gave him +5 to attack rolls and +3 to all other rolls, the Paladin chose a suit of enchanted armor that tacked +8 HP onto any healing role he made, the Druid got a cloak of leaves (she had tried to steal one in the 1st session, failed and constantly tried rolled to make one, but she always failed or it got destroyed not five minutes later), our wizard gained a dozen scrolls of various spells that played a major role in the next arc of sessions, the thief instead of taking the offered dagger that would have made her much stronger she chose to have an old journal repaired (this tied into massive time travel shenanigans in the next campaign with these characters), and I got a literal joke item in the form of a gold chain with the word pimp on it (the DM then forced my character to explain all that happened to our Party's more or less liaison with the ruling class and local guard, it also got put into an evidence chest that got destroyed not five minutes later by a dragon attack).

To everyone who keeps saying he should've just become immune to the effects: that's not how substance abuse works. If you keep taking methamphetamines, for example, you don't eventually just "get used" to it. It's actually quite the opposite, and honestly, the truth would've been far more interesting for this campaign. Drug tolerance over time decreases the drug's effectiveness. This includes the recreational effects which substance abusers are addicted to. You see, the brain adapts far quicker than the body does. So, over time, as these effects decrease, the user needs to consume more of the drug in order to get the same high. This creates a positive feedback loop, where the user's intake gradually increases overtime. But since the body doesn't adapt nearly as quickly, the physical effects become more and more debilitating over time. So what should be happening (and what I would do) is that his daily intake of Death Sticks should be increasing. He should be spending more and more of his income on Death Sticks. Meanwhile, his mechanical penalty should be increased to go along with his increased consumption. Two black die, than three, than three and an an automatic disadvantage, than three and an auto failure, etc. Honestly, that forest scene where he lost his death sticks was a real missed opportunity for him to experience the effects of chemical withdrawal.

A boon courtesy of the Death Stick loving dead sith lord you happened across. The tradeoff would be that as long you smoke them a dark influence will follow you around, making it ever more difficult to resist the lures of selfishness and greed. And here my DM was really excited when I wanted to kinda.....evolve my character a bit? I was a low level Paladin, around lvl 5 or so. I didn't know before hand we'd be starting in an undead heavy setting. And my character kept getting frustrated that the bad guys would just...get away without taking a scratch because their deceased minions. So talking with my GM, my Paladin evolved. I didn't know when it would happen, only that it would. Long story super short, I basically became a plate-armored necromancer and wasn't as physically strong as a paladin, but used magic to make my weapons hurt or debuff the enemy while at the beginning having extremely limited control over the undead. My character didn't even change alignment much when he "died", I went from Lawful Good to Chaotic Good. I was sick of seeing people's lives wasted against bad guys so I really wanted to turn their powers against them. So I began using death powers and undead minions to absorb damage and debuffs for my allies so they wouldn't get hurt. My team mates really liked the idea even though I was technically weaker because I lost the Almighty Smite. But I thought it was a neat idea.

This was a failure of DMing tbh. A homebrewed rule should’ve been in order so that the penalty of smoking them was less severe, since Ben’s character was a frequent user and more used to the effects. Still killing his body but not impacting him quite as significantly in combat. The penalty Ben received should be just for a first time / infrequent user. If I had a player like this who wants to play an addict, especially in a setting like Star Wars, I’d let them. And make adjustments so that the system doesn’t punish them quite so severely for… being an addict. I mean why punish a player for roleplaying

He could have made it so that you particularly didn't take penalties from deathsticks. Maybe you built up a resistance or maybe the drug did steady you enough to overcome the issues. Also, a smuggler would still probably follow the law when practical, only bending or breaking the law when they had to. A reputation as an honest merchant can be useful and you don't want to give the authorities an excuse to search your ship.
