To be fair, Anne joined your party at level 1 and she states that she's not a fighter. She learned to fight in PSII but not beforehand. They also couldn't afford to have the stories intersect because none of these characters recognize each other in PSII, so they couldn't interact much more than just having seen each other once. In Nei's case she looked like a young child when she met Rudger, so he wouldn't recognize her anyway.

Shelley exists purely to confirm that Rolf is for sure straight while never allowing him to be expressly sexual. This resolves his "living with" Nei who is clearly attractive as per Japanese Kain (even if she is technically like, two). He says he sees her as his "little sister," and we wouldn't want anyone to think Rolf had the gay! 🙄 Notice that Rolf also athletically and academically superior and that he chooses to be a "warrior" rather than a "caster." These are all tropes of the ideal shonen hero, exciting and Japanese-parent-approved. See also Sword Art Online, Dragon Ball, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX...

interesting video. It makes me wonder if text based RPGs are still a valid option in today's world. I'm really starting to think that there's alot that could be done with this type of game today.

This feels like kind of a missed opportunity to bring the actual personalities and backstories of some of these otherwise one-dimensional characters to life on par with other world-reknowned RPG characters. You expect motivations, coming of age stories, interactions with other party members, and instead you get shooting waterfalls, pince-nez humor, using a shampoo bottle to fix a broken lever, and one-off characters like Sue or Anna's love interest who don't appear in Phantasy Star II or any other Phantasy Star story. That's kind of sad, I'm glad these exist but troubled that for the most part these are such nothing burgers of stories

I feel like this may have been lost in translation? did the game mean to say 8 months instead of years?
@marksamson4173
Жыл бұрын
Well, these are all fan-translated since they were never released outside of Japan, so it's possible there were mistakes. There are also plenty of fan-translations for games out there where a lot of text isn't even properly translated at all and they just rewrite whatever the heck they want, figuring nobody is going to know either way. Who knows what the case is here

I looked it up in a Japanese LP, and it's 'years' for sure, it's impossible to misinterpret this pretty much - the language is rather flowery (8年の歳月). He is 21 in PS 2, so this makes more sense with that in mind. There are bad fantranslations, but sometimes the mistakes happen because of bad writing in Japanese and continuity errors. Japanese writing, just like English writing, can be 'really bad' every now and then. They mostly just never miss with the voice acting.

Uzo Island, in the manual, was once a resort spot. But then the biomonsters were unleashed, and the resort was evacuated. The other stories are generally okay to pretty good, but the protagonist's sucks. Getting his first agent assignment would have been awesome. Even a story about his training at the agency could have been interesting. Instead we get this weird story about teaching a CHILD humility by sending him to an isolated island for almost a decade. You'd think an agent would need to have some, I don't know, understanding of the societal constructs he has to investigate? Contacts among the various social stratas? Nope! Eight years of training with the obsolete weapon the sword! ... Eusis sucks, Rolf rules. Oh, and Phantasy Star IV's opening scenario was a reference to Hugh's adventure.
@stefanswiss3760

it is true that Yusis story is bad writing, almost to the level of an amateur fanfic. I would consider Rudo to be the worst though because it makes no sense and it doesn't give him anything, no new friends, no encounters, you don't get to explore PSII world either (you don't add to the lore)... those story don't get much done but well, having some kind of Xboxlive store back in 1990 is quite fantastic if you think about it. Last point : Goati a streamer who also recently did a playthrough of these made the connection obvious for Hugh and Neifirst : Neifirst and the biomonsters were born due to a large pick in energy in the biosystem lab, in Hugh story, he is the one responsible for a big burst of energy. Maybe without him there would have been no Nei / neifirst

Alex Ossale was a character referenced in the original, and I guess it references one of the developers who had Ossale as a nickname. Glad to see these adventures get some coverage. Makes me a bit wistful for what could have been a bigger franchise, though
