Thanks for this very helpful Q&A session! One note on the chances of interview for applicants from foreign countries - for some programs due to funding constraints international students will have less chances (or no chance at all). This pertains more to public universities as international students can not establish in-state residency for in-state tuition and not eligible for government training grants. So we are potentially talking about $100k difference in five-year training for international students vs. people who have US status. Some programs do not filter out international students for interview/admission but some definitely consider international status even before interview invites. Some PhD programs may be completely NIH funding dependent thus do not admit international students at all. If there is a current student profile/list, looking at the proportion of international students could give a brief idea of the program preferences.

Thanks for the great video! I had a question. I've only worked on a review paper and I was wondering if that could be helpful (compared to a research paper).

Thanks for the video, always very helpful! I applied to the USC PhD program in communication priority deadline (November 1). I do not know the benefit of it 😔 Sometimes I think that submitting my application in December would have been better as I could have worked more on my SOP. So confusing!

Hi Dr. Fiesler. Thank you so much for your video. I have a question: How important are the test scores for getting admission to a PhD program? e.g. I want to apply to a program but they ask for a 92 in TOEFL iBT but I got an 89. Do you think that I can receive a conditional offer of admission subject to join a prep course?
@CaseyFieslerPhD

Universities often have minimum TOEFL scores so you may want to look into what those are where you're applying.

Is it recommended to explicitly mention interest in research assistantship in the SOP for masters?
@CaseyFieslerPhD

I'm not sure why that would be helpful for you being admitted. My understanding is that RAships for masters are quite rare. You could however mention an interest in *research*.

Dr. Fiesler, I began working on my master's thesis last month and will be working till fall next year. It is only been a month working on it, so how do I discuss this research experience in SOP? Thank you for your time.

Hello, thanks for the video, I'm currently studying for the last year of my masters degree in economics. I would like to pursue a PhD in North America afterwards. Do I have to worry about not having work experience ( aside sclool assessments ) or where can I volunteer for helping on a project , even online .? Thanks

I think it's very common for applicants not to have work experience since many are applying straight out of school!

@@CaseyFieslerPhD How about research experience? Some advisors I reached out told me that "our candidates usually have research experience." So I got discouraged and didn't end up applying to those schools.

@@karenzhang1020 Yes, this is often an important strength of an application, but it's not always a deal breaker. If you don't have any experience with research make sure you make it very clear that you understand what it is and that it's what you want to do.

Hey Casey, one of my applications asks for a diversity statement, and you mentioned how things such as disability have impacted you/ your route to education. I was diagnosed with OCD during my undergraduate and it has certainly impacted me, but would this be harmful to mention? Thanks.

I really can't answer this for you... I personally wouldn't think so, but it's very difficult to know how these things might be perceived. I would hope it wouldn't be *harmful* but of course I can't guarantee that.

What should I do if I can’t find a potential supervisor? All potential supervisors I emailed have turned me down due to either COVID or lack of ability to take on students due to full capacity. I am beginning to get depressed and disappointed.

I think your question is whether you have to have done a thesis to get a PhD? Typically the answer is no though I'm not familiar with how programs in Europe might work.
