I'm a PA boy that missed the glory days. In 1970, 700,000 hunters shot 1.3 million birds. Nearly all of them wild. My dad often tells me of going out in the mornings before school walking through the asparagus patches and shooting their limits in the garden by the house.

I spent alot of time in Iowa in the late 80s & 90s. Sleezeballs would buy failing farms and put em in the soil banks. The area I was in was literally swarming with pheasants. Going to work they'd be cropping gravel along roadsides like ants at a picnic.

Man, I wish my state would do something like the program the game and fish did there. We have tons of farmland and timber company land that is all closed off for hunting. The national forest and the WMA's are filled to the gills during hunting season, it's a miracle anyone kills anything. Plus if we ever want to get the bobwhite quail to return in Arkansas we're going to need more landowners on board, and it's going to need to be profitable to get them there.

The most heart-warming thing about hunting doves and other game with a gun is having a well-trained, loyal and loving K9 companion afield. The hunting dog is important for the conservation of game and the dog can even let you know if birds are coming in case you did not see them of hear them yourself. I am troubled by all these dove hunting videos I see this day and age without the employment or retrieving dogs afield. About 33% of shot doves are never recovered. Humans do not have a dog's keen senses to find birds in cover. There is a serious waste problem. Dogs solve this problem for the most part. I like the notion of hunting with dogs for just old-fashioned charm. No, I don't want to spend time and energy combing through a sunflower or corn field for one or more dropped birds. There might be snakes hiding out there. The only "boy" I might have is a male Lab or golden. A retriever, K9 type, can also swim. Doves popped on the wing can and do fall into watering holes. Poison ivy....another good reason for a K9 in the dove field!

I have a year old yellow lab with probably the best nose and everything you’d want in a upland dog.Stays close works with wind doesn’t care about other dogs just wants to hunt and yes I am considering a GSP for my next dog but by the time Bo retires I will be late fifties and I’ve heard that GSP ‘s have even more energy than a lab.Is that true because I don’t know if I should get one then though I really want the challenge of training a pointer. How come you don’t like labs for hunting? I’ve had three and all were excellent hunting partners that I trained to stay close and never yelled or used a whistle. All three understood hand commands on what way to go etc...Just curious as to why. Thanks

@@bradgeffers1080 I have a GSP. And you have heard correctly. They are a handful. My schedule is pretty flexible and work at home most of the day, but she is constantly into something. I love labs, although I've never hunted with one. So I can't compare the two. My GSP did point her first woodcock at 5 months old. She is very intelligent and learns quickly. She's just very hyper. She is a year old now.

@@r.t.1659 Glad to hear about the woodcock at 5 myths. Same age my lab flushed first rooster.Had him out to SD. last fall twice and he was awesome. All of the labs I have had have been pretty hyper too but this last one is actually mellowing out now at a little over 3. I personally would love to have either one. I hunted with a buddy who has an English Setter and both dogs hunted together awesome no issues at all. Good luck this fall I keep telling Bo how many days till opening just about every day.Take care.

@@bradgeffers1080 I have a young shorthair who gets a 2 mile bike ride every day and that will take the edge off. 5 miles will get her good and tired. Look at a German Long Haired pointer/Deutsch Langhaar. I am considering one for my next dog. I've read that they are much more mellow in the home than a Shorthair.

I shoot a Auto 5. Not because I'm a bad shot but because it just feels better and has a very nice drop than any other shotgun in my hands. Very seldom do I need more than two shots. I have dropped three birds in one covey on the rise. Your not going to get that shooting a double barrel.
