I start off phono hunting.... But then I always think that the ones I'm gong to kill off might be that straight head ringer that I'm lookin for... So I end up keeping em all and just grow em out like I would any other good strain. And honestly, I've gotten so lucky while doing that because that runt of a seedling ended up being the shining light come harvest time. So the only reason I run 10 at a time of the same strain is not necessarily to pheno hunt... It's just to follow them all to harvest and enjoy the different traits they all have. But that's why you always gotta keep em marked and take clones, because you'll never know which will be that BANGER!

I’ve learned in my personal experience of pheno hunting, to clone everything….. You never know how good something will be after it’s done flowering, and you actually smoke it or dab it. The quality doesn’t really show till you try it Rob my Pheno hunt was for an Elite Skywalker OG, Then backcrossed it, crossed that with Super Skunk, and backcross to Skywalker OG again, and called it Super Skywalker OG. But I renamed it Abacherli OG. It took 5 years and I’m still stabilizing the seeds with back crossing.

I'm a 44yr old dude who lives in Louisville, KY... An illegal state. The bill to go medical went to shit when it hit congress. Our governor grew a set of balls and passed the medical mj bill by way of executive order! I'm a long time smoker and 1st time grower. I'm 7 weeks into bloom on 2 plants... Purp Dream and Rum Runner. What I wanna do is cultivate my own strains. My guy who got me into growing has been doing it for 30+ years and is a master at banging out seeds and crossing strains. Well he used to be... Years ago back in the 90s. This guy is really old school. I'm talking no internet, box TV old school. He's my age, 44. 20 years ago he got popped running a 100 plant operation and has purposely been living under a rock ever since. The man can grow absolute killer pot though. When I told him how easy it is for me to get seeds he didn't believe me. So I bought a pack of 10 Green Crack beans to prove it. When they arrived at my house in 2 weeks he lost his shit. Then he tells me how easy it is to cross pollinate using colloidal silver. Suddenly pheno hunting takes on a whole new meaning as I'll be looking for the best of the best of different strains to cross with the best of the best of other different strains! I'm in the process of transforming a pole barn into a "grow lab". It's funny watching the eyes of my friend pop out of his head when I show him all of the different KZitem videos that are mj related. It literally blows his mind.

How does one keep a pheno once it's already in flower? Are you re-vegging that plant after harvest, or are you making each pheno a mother, and flowering thier clones and then keeping the best mother out of the ones you popped? Also, VaderOG would be amazing for a second episode about this!

I think it’s important to add that this is a little more complicated than just genes vs expression. Every plant within a specific Cultivar will not have the same genes or epigenetics. It’s kinda like domestic dogs. They are all literally the same species but even within a particular “breed” you have a wide variation. Phenotype literally means the physical expression of the given genes. And this can be effected by a lot of things. I’m really glad you brought up how the grow environment can even change how a clone will behave. Keep it up men.

I've got 3 that are days away from harvest. Seeds were crossed a few years ago by me and my father, RIP, Jack Herer and either NY diesel or sour diesel. I'm pretty sure they're Sour Jack's. Terps are similar, straight gas, but could not be further apart visually. One looks more like a kush with a nice deep green; one has quite a bit of purple to it; and the last one I wish I would have known it was going to bush out the way it did because with more training I could seriously have gotten close to 30 colas'

Doing my first pheno hunt. Male characteristics I hear to look for are late to flower. The early to flower tend toward hemp. To know the characteristics of a male you need to pollinate many female clones and look at the dominate characterises that are passed on. Much easier to know what characteristics you have, if you convert a female to male.

Once a treasure hunter, always a treasure hunter. You know what's more fun, looking for the right phenotype with the perfect chemotype for you or your patient as an individual. I found my Moby Dick once (1000's of beans popped and flowered), but the clones refused to root and it died extremely fast when I tried to reveg it, have never had both fail. I'll probably never find it again, that's how vast the genetic pool is for Cannabis.

It would be great to cover the standards of breeders, not by name but what should be expected from good genetics. For example how autos are made. Cross of ruderalis with a known strain, cross of 2 autos, cross of an auto with a known strain. Which is best or does one go for a company with just known genetics track record.

It's technical stuff but in my opinion a pheno-hunt is a geno-hunt. You're trying to find the single unique genome that produces the best pheno in your environnement, and eliminate the genomes that don't. It's fundamentally a hunt for the right DNA.

Pheno hunting ilgm’s old school bubblegum. 4 very uniform similar ladies in veg. One is extra vigorous and was resistant to drought when I missed a water which is cool. One has pistols already at week 2! Another one is finicky and kinda looks like shit after it dried out, so I’m keeping my eye on that lady. The last one is just kinda medium a little like all of them. Pheno hunting is fun. Smell the leaves in veg, can be a good give away of potency

Do you take a cutting off every plant you grow before flower, to make sure if one comes out how you like, you have a clone?
@OnlyTheKushest
2 жыл бұрын
Take several cuttings of each one. If you have the time and space it's better to keep the mother from seed and flower the clones to see what the end results will be. It is debatable whether a mother from seed is better than a mother from clone or not but some people believe that a mother from seed is best. Either way, both options will work.
