Spyres is the best: his French is impeccable, his comical acting is a joy to watch. As to his singing, it’s marvelous ❤

This aria from Le postillon de Lonjumeau (Mes amis, écoutez l'histoire) will always and forever belong to Joseph Schmidt...

I like to imagine that if Nicolai Gedda were still alive to hear this that he would be very happy. The best since his, which will always be legendary, of course. But even Gedda didn't trill like that!

I didn't know anyone could still sing this aria. Let's not forget about Helge Roswaenge's rendition either! Vive la chanson!

The finest rendition of this obscure but very difficult aria since the late great Nicolai Gedda. Spyres is a revelation, possibly my favorite voice I’ve heard in person.

only difficult? trills upon trills up there for the tenor and then a sustained D5? unbelievable vocal writing...
@manolis.799

@@LohengrinOit’s possible that Adam meant the D5 as a passing tone, not meant to be sung in full modal voice but rather a mixed approach. That would be consistent with the French style. However with Gedda and others the approach came to be to sing it full out, which is much more thrilling.

@@manolis.799 I think you're right. The first to sing this role was Jean-Baptiste Chollet, who was a baritenor. Moreover, the first to sing high C in full voice was Gilbert Duprez in 1830, but in Italy. His technical style became popular in France only in 1837. Till that moment, the tenors in France sang like Alphonse Nourrit, with the tecnique of "falsettone" for very high notes. "Le Postillon" was premiered in 1836, so i find almost impossible that the high D was meant to be sung in full voice. With falsettone this aria is much less demanding, even if it remains a very difficult piece.

I think it comes from "Le Postillion de Longjumeau" by Adolphe Adam.
