Awesome clip. I love these videos from the 80's. I remember how expensive these units were. I would walk into a music store, grab a set of headphones and play one, then go home and cry... hahaha. These things were so far removed from the teenage home musician it was crazy. I remember when I got my first Roland D50 I had like 6 guys over from school just for the unboxing haha.

Years ago, more then 25, i missed the Linndrum machine. They asked 750 guilders for it (now with the euro it would have been close to 300 euro which is like 300 dollar. I see a couple for 5,999.00 and one for 10,000.00 because it belonged to a member of the band the Cars.

Great clip thanks for posting. According to Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford is responsible for the Mama drum pattern. The album sound was achieved by routing the Linn Drum through an AMS RM16 Reverb to give the weird gated effect.

Indeed Pat, Huey Lewis & The News ain't bad either ;) They actually used LinnDrums on some of their 'Sports' tunes ('I Want A New Drug' and most notably 'Bad Is Bad' for which one they still do to this day), despite having a (very good) drummer.

The LinnDrum had different sounds available for purchase, including the old Linn LM-1 Sounds, such as for the kick and the snare, and apparently also for the tambourine too. However, I’d say the Linn LM-1 was more capable than the successor, for two reasons. The first reason being that every instrument on the machine was tunable. On the LinnDrum, it was only the Snare/Sidestick, Conga and Toms, including the decay of the HiHat. Also on the LM-1, The HiHat was constantly looped to give it a unique sound every time it was played, so it feels like a real drummer was playing. The LinnDrum didn’t have that feature for it’s HiHat’s, so there’s a good chance that they had access to an original LM-1 to record, but from the looks they used a LinnDrum with LM-1 sounds.
