Phil Longo takes a non-traditional approach to teaching his quarterbacks to drop back to pass. Instead of the usual cross-over footwork most coaches teach, Longo teaches his quarterbacks to "back out" (or backpedal), keeping their shoulders more square to the line of scrimmage during the drop.
Longo says that statistical analysis shows that quarterbacks that "front out" in their drop lose about 10-15% accuracy when throwing to the back side, but those who back out do not lose accuracy at all, allowing him to use more of the field as a playcaller.
