First time, I heard this song I was 22 years old now I’m 70 years old and now I can relate to it.

This gives me chills every time I hear it. His singing and words touch something deep inside me. Phil Ochs forever, as we'll need him forever.

I prefer to feel joyful when I think of Phil Ochs despite knowing of his painful illness and early death. The joy is that his songs remain to inspire and steer us. He truly did it while he was here.

By “painful illness” do you mean his bipolar nervous system and alcoholism?

@@cacampbell3654 Yes. It became so severe he was living on the streets and suffered from dissociative symptoms where he didn't even know who he was. A cruel illness.

We need a Phil Ochs more than ever these days. I understand his pain, as I am dealing with depression and question whether I can keep going. But, as ironic as it sounds, this song helps me keep going.

We have David Rovics, but times have changed: topical songwriters no longer fill halls and only a handful listen to them. Those that do, however, are still rewarded as were the listeners to Phil Ochs.

I wish Phil understood how relevant his music was and still is. I wish he was strong enough to weather his pain. I just wish he knew how much his music still resonates with us. It fills me with both joy and sadness and the determination to make changes.

You “wish he was strong enough to weather his pain”. Why do you assume you know anything about his pain?! Why do you assume that enduring more of it required “strength”?!

Phil Ochs hanged himself on April 9, 1976. The FBI had 500 pages of information on him. And yet, here he is. Just as relevant as he was then.

@@doctortabby I hear what you’re wishing for and why. ❤️ I “wish” we lived in a culture that did a better job of preventing people getting to the point where they want to die so much that they find a way to do just that. I wish we lived in a culture where each of us was aware that we collectively create the culture we have with each decision we make. So much would have to change ....
