Its tragic Phil Spector made the choices he did. He left such a complicated legacy. His actions as an individual range from appalling to unforgivable but his impact on music will likely never be replicated. If theres one positive thing to remember about Phil Spector more then his writing and production, he used his fame to champion for black and female artists at a time when few did. His contributions to music deserve to live forever through the artists that sang them.

@Tazmanian_Ninja

What many non-artistic people don't get, is that exactly THE SAME MIND of the artist, is responsible for both the good and bad ways it is expressed. People often seem to think that Brian Wilson would/could have created his masterpieces if he didn't go bonkers. Not the case. He went bonkers because his mind is the mind of a genius / great artist. One with an obsessive, fragile mind. Same goes for Phil Spector. Whatever he ended up doing (or not doing... Personally I believe it was a tragic accident that happened while two people were crazy drunk and foolin' around) - does not take ANYTHING away from his artistic accomplishments throughout his long life. What I'm saying is: you can't always have one without the other. At times yes (George Martin), but not always. And yes: that accident would've never happened had he not owned guns. Yet again, people only see the GUNS and stories about him chasing Lennon around the studio, etc. They don't see the PERSON. What brought them there. Phil Spector got robbed or mugged at some point early on. After which he began carrying, and felt a need to show he was in control - not to be messed with. Not ok, of course. But only if you've tried getting robbed/mugged/beaten'up like he (and I) have, will you understand how the human mind can react, subsequently. I was in therapy for years to get past that stuff. And yes, before I succeeded at that, it also influenced me to behave very badly at times.

This comment made me feel sick... I agree that a creative mind is responsible for the good and the bad ways it is expressed. Key word RESPONSIBLE! The fact that he killed someone should take away from his accomplishments. Like the music for the music but I don't understand going out of your way to pay homage to someone with a comment like this when they did something so horrific. And as for the comment about him feeling unsafe as he was mugged previously... Why would you invite someone into your home if you did not feel safe or in control?? Why would you force someone to sit in a chair and put a gun in their mouth and not point it at them and tell them to leave instead? I am sorry that you have gone through that experience yourself. No one deserves that but she did not deserved to be killed. Take what he has given to the world but always remember what he has taken from it. Lana deserved a long life.

@@katiewhyte681 I am just not 100% convinced he did kill her. The trial vent on for a loooooong time. If he did, that IS (of course!) horrible. But what I'm saying is just that whatever he did later in life, has absolutely NOTHING to do with the music he created. Nothing nothing nothing.
@katiewhyte681
4 жыл бұрын
Well he definitely killed her, I guess you mean you are not convinced it wasn't an accident... I think its best to agree to disagree on this. When you talk about someone going mad and killing someone because they have the mind of a great artist, it seems like a weird justification to me, especially if you believe it was an accident. Anyway, I don't think either of us are going to convince the other.

Ninja: This is completely wrong. Not only does the mind change over time, but even in a single moment it is never a unitary thing. Read Carl Sagan’s “The Dragon’s of Eden” about the evolution of the brain. Read Hermann Hesse’s “Steppenwolf”, an artistic exploration of the multi-faceted soul. Even the neo-cortex itself clearly cleaves in two, and the neo-cortex is only part of the brain. Freud’s ego/id/superego tripartite division may have been naive, but Freud’s insight that we do not function has a single entity has been firmly established. Moreover, the vast majority of geniuses, including artistic geniuses, are perfectly sane. Risibly over-rated pop stars? Not so much. It isn’t talent that causes people to snap; it’s pop-celebrity excess. It’s telling that the only examples you mention are pop stars. That’s because YOU are part of the problem; YOU, with your warped perspective on culture, your cultural blinders, are helping to fuel pop-celebrity excess.

For those watching, it was announced by the New York Times (albeit there are better sources) that Phil Died at the age of 81. While I do have my gripe about him, he did create some of the best music in the biz from the Ronettes to the Ramones (Albeit through Joey Ramone and no one else) to even John Lennon and the beatles, of whome would go on to be legends in the biz. Not only that, but, depending how you view it, he practically had the whole "Corrupt Producer" character in spades. Guy apparently had guns that he would normally point at whomever he was working with. DeeDee Ramone, during an interview in 1982, had tiny comment about his gun habits. Depending on how you viewed these habits, this may helped people recognize that there was something wrong with the biz. All in all, he was legend who was punished and stripped of that status when he committed murder. Shame too, with the way he was going he would not only lived a legend, it could've been possible he would've died a legend in a legendary way. Sorry Phil, legends is a title you don't taint. Hopefully god has a forgiving heart for you. See ya around.

Spector had a psychiatrist ( Dr. Kaplan ) in the early 60's, but the therapy wasn't successful. There were no therapies for PTSD at the time, if it was recognized at all, and even if it was, the biological component was completely unknown. ( The way stress can chemically imprint memories in the brain ) The probable source of Spectors PTSD-fueled paranoia was an incident that occurred while he was out to dinner with the song-writer, Doc Pomus. He told the story when inducting Pomus into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It's posted online. Very heavy ... and sadly true.

Henry Ford didnt invent the motor car but he did make it accessible to the masses. Say what you want about Phil Spector but that 60s sound that its so famous for? he created it... he produced some of the most iconic music in an era when the foundation was being laid for the last 3 generations of music...Any band that has been around the last 50 years can be traced back. to its roots. You can only be original once. As far as music goes as art the 60s and early 70s were the verbal art on which this countries civil change is founded. When the history books look back all of that is going to be associated with the music and who created it. What's more powerful than that? To bad he had to ruin it by being a abusive terrible husband and an out of touch with reality senior citizen with an urge for killing.

The one beaming beautiful light on our dark work and he blew it all a way. He gave it a good shot but it all ended up in smoke. But he was part of the Big Bang of music that changed the world. He literally shot straight to the top and invented music production

He had a habit of pulling guns on people, especially women who were reluctant to have sex with him. We know exactly what happened, this time the gun went off.

Phil was a mess personally but a great producer. Of course he will always be remembered as a murderer but he did change the way music was recorded. His influence and sound changed everything. After listening to his wall of sound structure I do believe Brian Wilson took it another step further. Brian is a genius and wrote some of the most heart warming songs of all time. But Brian will always say he was influenced by Spector. I hope people listen to Brian's work and really cherish it but still remember Phil was the muse that made him record in that structure. RIP Phil. As fans try to separate the two sides of this complexed man. What he did was beyond wrong but this is about his music that will live on for years.

- the tragic genius, but a genius nonetheless, I will always consider Phil Spector the greatest Producer of Records. The minute I heard his sound, I recognized it BECAUSE OF ITS DEPTH. I remember looking into his eyes years and years ago and he LOOKED at people. He took an interest in my music as well. Luckily, fate kept me safe.

Guilty of being a terrible human being who used violence against women. The powder burn and blood splatter evidence says he didn’t kill that woman. The lesson is guns aren’t toys, keep them locked up.

Some of the artists he produced were supremely talented. His sound referred to as the wall of sound was overproduced. There is genius in many professions but when it comes to art - many are quick to elevate the musicians, producers, and managers to status of genius level - when it’s a team effort. The final result is sublime sometimes. A team of people build a bridge. They name it after someone deemed to be important but those that actually designed, manufactured, and build it receive little credit. Yet they are the brains and brawn behind said project. I’m not saying he wasn’t good at what he did but saying he was a genius is overstated. IMO

Heh heh... I just happened to be the 800st. 'liker' of this video. That's a bit special regarding the fact it was in the week Mr. Spector died. More of this interview please; I hear some interesting things being interested in the subject. (But please mind the audio levels regarding the difference between uncompressed speech and quite heavily compressed music. Thanks ;o)

A smörgåsbord of psychopathology and a cautionary example of what decades of abusing alcohol and recreational drugs can result in. If the murder stood alone he might be passed off as a flawed genius who had a meltdown, but it came at the end of half a century of terrorising those around him. Bad & Mad!

All I can say is, he held in his shaky little hands Our first memories of music. Take away the crazy look of this genius and your left with a mind for music that was genius. He did the crime & paid with his time, he owes nothing to society & has left this earth. Who wants to be remembered by the stupid or crazy shit we've done? Nobody! R.I.P. PHIL SPECTOR.

He was a character thats for sure .... Intelligent ..... BUT wherever he was bored and just kept binging with drugs and alcohol and that led to him just stopping over that line that can't be stepped over. ( he would have had an incredible life of just doing whatever you want to do throughout the 50s 60s and 70s drugs, sex, alcohol would have got the lot so it would have been like a pure drug that he craved and then he just could not get it anymore
