I think you might find his speaking voice, has the resonance it has. After Pantera, I am led to believe he dropped the register of his speaking voice lower. It is rumored to be a side affect of his drug addiction at the time. If you can shed more light on this, or scotch the rumor, please do.

This could have gone on for another hour or two. I imagine Phil has a lot more stories to tell and wisdom to share about the world of a rock star and drug addict. Stories and wisdom that Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley, and many others didn't live to share. It's a tragic thing how hard drugs and rock music go hand in hand. The music of an addict becomes compelling, and you feel you're seeing it through their eyes by listening to it through their words. You watch a world unfold in front of you that you might not otherwise gain an understanding of. My hat's off to Phil. He went through hell, made it out, and lives to tell the younger generation of the bullshit, pain, broken relationships, and wasted years that come along with the addiction. I know he regrets the very moment he first shot up, and he damn sure regrets the years he pissed away on the chase. Good luck to ya. Phil. Keep writing music, and sure as hell keep spreading the word to the younger generation that addiction is only a means to an end.

This is the first time Ive heard Phil talk. Seriously.. He's an interesting guy. Not only did he speak from the heart here, but I think he also showed flashes of exactly why he has been so successful. He never did say exactly how he kicked heroin or if he is on methadone or whatever. But I get the feeling he's still in full on combat with some powerful demons. He talked a lot about will, and I think that anyone with a lesser will could not have reached his level of new power. I do wish him the best.

I suffered the same blown discs, the surgery that is a Brutal, Horrific two stage event that nearly killed me, and The Fucking Pain. It Never goes away, even after the surgery for most people. If the drugs don't kill you, and the nervous breakdowns don't get you committed, and you don't succumb to your daily suicidal thoughts(I know what all my guns taste like), you make it out of the other end with a shred of the life you had and build from there. It's all sheer will. Anselmo should be commended for managing to maintain a productive life. He is the exception because he wills it.

In some interview he said he didn't know why his voice changed. In the late 80's he could hit notes like Rob Halford, but in the early 90's it was gone. He was only 19 when he joined Pantera, and I heard demo's of his first band ''Razor White'' when he was 17. Probably his voice hadn't matured yet. Phil himself said something to the effect of ''all out of a sudden my balls dropped''. All I know is that I always loved his voice and especially his shows as a frontman.

the most important thing that he addressed in this interview in the beginning was how adamant he was about the industry in itself. the music industry put you up on a pedestal and walk you around like a show dog and you are basically their puppet in the same can be said about drug addiction an example Metallica Master of Puppets. that song was written about cocaine addiction and how you feel like a marionette on the end of the string. it is something that only a few select people comma with modest intentions and expectations of the world can allowed the fame and fortune to not get to their head. and this is why only those that were able to do that are still around after 20 or 30 years or more of play music to earn your bread thank you for your time if you read through this I appreciate it I welcome comments positive or negative

I have so much respect for Phil,i have been fighting addiction for 15+yrs now and have finally gotten it under control and gotten clean with the use of suboxone but i was brought to tears with what he said in this and how so much of the story he is telling painted a bright pic in my mind of what i was going through.I have been a fan of his from the begining andlove all his work.Wherever you are Phil i just want to say"THANK YOU"for being my inspiration, made me love life for real...Thank you

This is one of those rare interviews that actually allows a person to represent themselves without any filter. Phil was projected as being such a bull-headed individual during the 90's. He always came across as a bit intimidating and standoffish. Phil is a talented guy and it was interesting listening to him be so candid and introspective. Definitely took guts to be able to share the dark side of his hard living. Thanks for sharing.

At 13:33, he begins talking about will and love. Sounds very similar to the message from Thelema and Crowley to me. Love is the law, love under will. Anyone else see this correlation? It seems highly unlikely that this is a coincidence to m.e. Phil may have been influenced by Crowley
