@History Snapshot. Pétain was never a hero in Verdun, he only stayed there for the first 2 months (March April 1916) and was removed from the battlefield on the orders of his leader, Generalissimo Joffre, because during his stay in Verdun he twice presented the project to evacuate Verdun. between March 3 and March 30, 1916 and will be replaced immediately on the evening of April 30, 1916 by another general References the memoirs of Marshal Joffre (2 volumes)

Good point, but I was just mentioning who he was to the French people. For them, he WAS the 'Hero of Verdun'.

@@HistorySnapshot. Another point was a false legend! Since the 1980s we have realized that Petain was the impostor of Verdun. The French of 1940 wanted Peace, but that doesn't mean they wanted Petain. And what's more, he will illegally become head of state on July 11, 1940, without having received the slightest mandate to do precisely that.

@@didierroux1547 Oh yeah for sure. Petain was an opportunist, and worked with the most evil man in history. To me, he is no hero, but some people might remember him as one just because of Verdun (even if that isn't accurate).

@@HistorySnapshot. I could surprise you, but the bad man was petain Who, just after having illegally proclaimed himself head of state, who began to write, in July 1940, the first statute of the Jews (discriminatory laws), statute which will be published on October 3, 1940, without any request or pressure from the Germans, and while Pierre Laval was not interested in it at all ! Thanks to Robert Paxton with his 1972 work, arrived and translated in 1973 in France. Thanks to him who opened the eyes of the French to the real responsibilities of Petain from 1940 to 1944.

@@HistorySnapshot. Have you read or heard of the work entitled "The Collapse Ot the Third Republic! An inquiry into the fall of France" 1969, by William L. Shirer ? Shirer (1904-1993) was one of the American reporters who followed, day by day, the Franco-British declarations of war on September 3, 1939, the Battle of France May-June 1940, the signing of the armistice in France on June 22, 1940 and Shirer, who knew French, the application of this armistice on June 25, 1940.
