Dumb commentators should stop saying he moved or he flinched everytime the players miss a simple shot. FYI they move or flinch after the shot has been taken because they already see that it is not going as they expected or planned. The move or the flinch is a reaction to the missed shot NOT THE CAUSE of the missed shot!

If Mark W. doesn't read the comments, can someone who knows him please point him to the first three paragraphs, below, of this comment, or copy and paste it into an email for him. Thanks. If nothing else, at least he will then at least have the info, and the heads up to possibly increase effectiveness in what he is trying to accomplish with his school. Mark, I understand WHY you require the grades you do for your school, and don't wholly disagree with it, especially as a fall back for those that don't attain enough proficiency to make a living at it, but I wonder if you aren't negating some future serious pool contenders by that requirement. Maybe it would be more beneficial to look at the individual scholastic CAPABILITIES of each kid, especially if they show EXTREME ability in the sport, and hold them to that. Just sayin', food for thought. You don't exactly have to be an Einstein to play pool. Some of the best players I've seen are assuredly not the sharpest knives in the drawer, so to speak, until you get them on a pool table. "One size fits all" rules are often not the best of ideas, either. After all, isn't the point to teach them pool, AND to give them the best start in life, otherwise? You know as well as I do that some pro pool players scholastic qualifications are not all that impressive. Hell, your and my FAVORITE pro quit school at 15, right? Obviously that's not the goal, but it happens. I realize he's the extreme from both sides and not the rule. And I'm saying this not because my family is uneducated, I am an engineer and my wife has a masters in counseling, including play therapy and gifted education, and she read what I just wrote and wholeheartedly agrees. She said giftedness comes in all forms and blends, and high grades are not NECESSARILY one of them. She says a good book for an intro is When Gifted Kids Don't Have All the Answers by Jim Delisle, PH.D., and Judy Gailbraith, MA. But I'm pretty sure you increasing your knowledge a bit in this area could positively impact your "mission". Thanks for reading this, if you see it. I know you are probably up to your eyeballs in alligators and working "40 hours a day" but Gifted Kids Survival Guide is another, if you want to pursue further. Cheers...I enjoy Danny and your commentary, and think the school is a GREAT idea. My two cents, anyway, take it or leave it. My wife said she would be happy to talk to you on this subject if you are interested, just answer me hear and we can figure out how to get in touch without opening your communication channel to the world, a temporary dummy email account or whatever, if you want to actually talk over a phone about it. You can also obviously research it yourself without too much difficulty. Now, for this video: Modifying the break rules to say two down is compliant....it's about freakin' TIME. I know I'm preaching (back) to the choir here on that one, but seriously, finally. I understand the rule was to eliminate soft breaks, but how often can you soft break and sink two? Not very. The obvious correct rule is a radar or something equivalent to the sound triggered Predator phone app to specify a minimum break speed. That negates all the secondary, often not that fair supposed 'break speed indicators', and just gets to the actual heart of the matter, THE parameter being specified, the break speed. And it's not like it would cost a lot. You could just have the clock person check the speed if it was ever in question, as almost ALL breaks obviously are not, just visually assessing them. It would also help eliminate ref errors, which I've seen at least once (missing and not calling one that was a non-compliant break). I don't know who's been tweaking rules, but I like the 'no push' on a non-compliant next shot, as well. At a pro level, I'd just as soon they did away with the push altogether, I really don't see that it adds anything to the game. Not as likely, but you can end up snookered on an eight break, as well, and there's no 'push'. You broke, it fell like it fell, man up and shoot! Someone should run a stat on how often people 'win' the lag, because it seems to me like a useless shot, pro level. Amateur level, maybe a push makes some sense, but a pro should be able to kick to a hit from to pretty much anywhere, and there are some lesser strategies available if they can't, like tying up that ball. Two percent of accuracy gone for each degree cue elevation. That is hard to believe. Not like you to make statements without knowing the data, though, so if I can EVER get back to a table, I'm going to check that out. If true (and probably is) that is a very good thing to know. Three Kos, really??? Are there any more brothers or sisters coming in the future? His shot @ 10:21. How often does he complete a shot of THAT difficulty? What a near perfect execution in the first game and that. SVB, Pag and Co...watch out. This guy is another SERIOUSLY "real thing". Makes me wonder if the next 'Efren' will be Chinese. We need some more serious schools, here. "And he couldn't play in the NBA" Good one, Danny. It was interesting how many times Ko readusted his position once down on that bridged shot at 17:58. He absolutely wanted the butt of that cue and his head precisely placed. Most amateurs would have just moved the butt of the cue an inch, I suspect, but these guys are meticulous about 'details' like that. The psychological aspect of leaving yourself a hard shot on a mistake over your opponent leaving you EXACTLY the same shot on a blown runout is SO true. Makes me think you should somehow state something internally that gets you in the same frame of mind as if your opponent HAD left that shot. I'm not sure what that would be exactly, but someone (or everyone individually) should work on it. I really like Mark's shot at 2:15:28. It is dead easy to execute ties balls AND leaves a dead easy snooker. I would have never thought of that shot if I had this table in a match, and I really should start looking for that sort of option more often when pretty much every aspect of the shot sucks. That was the goofiest ending to a superbly played match I have EVER seen. It was like you want it? Nah, I'll give you another shot at it. I don't want it, you take it. OK, I will...finally. Really excellent and entertaining match to watch. They both played superbly, with a few really weird misses thrown it. At the end it looked like Gomez was trying to work out some kinks somewhere or something with the shrugging and neck bending going on walking over and back. Like a nerve was acting up and twitching a muscle off and on or something. I've never had that happen during a game, but I can flat out see where it could mess your concentration up enough to make you do things like shorting that pretty easy draw Gomez was attempting back from the lower right corner, where he got about 1/4 t 1/3 of what he was looking for. Strange.

I read your comment and felt it was very well written. Wonder what Mark would say. I have to wonder if Mark’s thing about getting good grades has to do with the fact that if you’re not a top 20 player, you’re gonna have a hard time making a living as a pro pool player, unless you do something else on the side. And it must be very difficult to tell if a child will be a top 20 player when they’re so young.
@MrJdsenior
3 жыл бұрын
@@logic368 Thanks. Yes, I think that is exactly what he is thinking and I agree with him, for the most part, for students that are ABLE to pull those grades. I was just trying to point out that if he had someone who, say, was pulling a C average, and by getting them into the pool school, and getting them to pull a B at that point, if that is the best they can do, or keeping them from dropping out, if they were currently at risk of that would be beneficial to that child, as well. There are kids out there, including kids that are smart that will NEVER turn out a 3.5 - 4 grade average, no matter how hard they try. There are many many children who don't make great grades in school that go on to lead very productive and sometimes very lucrative lives, as well. The converse is also true. There are also people, like myself, who were bored absolutely to TEARS at lower grade levels, and didn't have a 4.0 leaving high school, not by a large margin, but then who later went to college, did make pretty decent grades (3.5 in my case) and led careers afterward. Regurgitating rote garbage on tests (grades) is not the perfect indicator of success, and it's becoming less and less so all the time. My son currently holds down an engineering level job, and he's had VERY little college. He was home schooled, taught himself several computer languages, and just recently did in one weekend, by writing some code, what the engineering lead had told the owners would take 3 months of their entire engineering staff to accomplish. He drove his own education from the time he was about 13, and had his own computer repair service at 15, charging $60 an hour, and now brings in very capable degreed engineers to consult for him (and the company). He hopes to start selling some of this code (programming to streamline CAD/CAM) and greatly improve productivity in general for companies and people using some of these common off the shelf programs. If he succeeds he will probably make far more than I did working in aerospace design. But then again, MONEY isn't everything either. The best part is having fun doing your chosen career, and the programming part of it, anyway, he does. Also, there are places in the world, like European Snooker where you don't have to be even CLOSE to the top twenty to make good money, and letting you in on a little secret, some pros make a lot more money OUTSIDE of tournaments than they do in them. For many, their listed winnings is just a small portion of their REAL 'take'. Many very top notch Filipino players have zero interest in becoming pros, because they would have to take a massive drop in earnings. Pretty sure that is true all over the world.
