@MrOrf2 The same reason because they are used in this amp .. they got power ;). They are good to get at least the legal limit .. or to use them as a driver stage for a more manly amplifier.

@bobyoung53 The fans are original. The amplifiers were build in 1955 by Philips in The Netherlands. They weigh 150 kilo each. The work on 380 volts. The are very rare. It was a complete surprise when I saw them for sale on the internet.

All I have to say is that those are fantastic amplifiers. I love staring at the mercury tube rectifiers. If I were interesting in finding an old amp such as this to restore, where would be a good place to look? In my ECE classes they teach us about modern amplifier and circuit designs but I also want to learn about past electrical designs as well and hopefully would be able to restore something like this in the future.

its about how the measure watts, modern audio companies overate their products to sell more, not following the standard RMS sinewave into given load. i even compared a "1.5KW" modern amp to a kt88 PP amp i have, it gives around 60 watts at full load at under 0.5% distortion. tube amp played louder it terms of hearing and dB. while also sounding better ofcourse.

Plate modulated AM radio station transmitters require an audio amp that is a strong as the Rf amp. So if you have 10,000 watt radio station botht e RF and AF amps have to be 10,000 watts. The signals are mixed at the final stage plate.

"Tube watts" sound like more power because tubes produce more even order harmonics and still "sound good" even though they are distorting. Check it out on a scope some day. The waveform will clearly start to deform yet it still sounds good. Transistor amps produce...well they don't produce anything but garbage but companies still try. :)

Hi MrOrf2 Whats happened with the 6 recifier tubes in the lower side of this amp? I see, somebody changed them to a series of semiconductor diodes. Maybe from technical side, it's more efficient, but it's NOT original. But anyway - ABSOLUTELY nice thing!
