Well done Alex on getting it done in quick time for me to collect- much appreciated! I hadn't even lifted the lid on this one due to lack of time so no idea what horrors lurked underneath! I've managed to get a tape from the broadcast archive I do work with so will be trying it out very shortly. Just hoping the recording is an N1700. The label says August 1976 so perhaps not?! I'll film the test session anyway so standby.......

If you need some N1700 recordings, I should have some spare.

That would be fantastic. If you could spare 1 or 2 known N1700 cassettes, that would be great.

This was my first VCR circa 1977. Sorry to hear you’re having technical difficulties.

I got it working well in the end though 😊Really an amazing machine and such a shame Philips didn't make more of an impact with their machines.

Hi, Alex. You could connect another VCR and take its RF output and feed it into the Aerial input of the N1700 and then try to tune in the signal on the N1700. You can then try and record with the N1700 and test its playback. One common issue on these machines is that the Play Rec switches tend to go faulty which gives distorted picture. The Video board also has a lot of dry joints that occur along with time. Good Video...

Loved this Alex. I remember selling the N1700s in Dixons, when Philips were offloading the last stocks. They were £299 as I remember, much cheaper than the VHS & Betamax ones of the time. The quality was excellent, due to the faster video writing speed & linear audio speed. They were a bit hit & miss reliability-wise though, mainly down to the stacked, coaxial tapes I think. I could see why Philips did this, as the tapes would’ve been Umatic size otherwise, not ideal for the domestic market but it was definitely a weakness. Love how mechanical they are, good to see how everything works. I enjoy playing my N1702 but I found all the tapes I had were SVR ones. Bought one off eBay with a recording of Star Wars on it, which was great but the tape squeals & mistracks, not ideal. I ended up recording from an old Freesat recording box routed by scart to a JVC SVHS machine with RF out into the RF in of the N1702, chose some old reruns from about the time the machine would’ve been current. Only thing I missed were the adverts of the time but the Star Wars tape does have a few from the early 80s which play ok. I look forward to your working on the other N1700s. Rob.

I would rather have a Betacam L cassette size than unreliability.

So on this format, the long play machines only play the LP tapes and are not compatible with the tapes recorded in SP? At least I learned that now before diving into this format. I am US-based, so importing machines and tapes will be a bit tricky/costly, but it seems like a fun endeavor since in the end I'll be able to watch old TV recordings from the PAL region. The US had Cartrivision and Quasar VX formats that also used the stacked-reels style cassette. Video2000 is another format I intend to work on at some point too, at least material for that is easier to find than the VCR format.

I have no experience repairing PHILIPS VCR N devices. But I do have an old looking 1700 whose drive looks MUCH cleaner than the rest of the device. I'll have to compare the serial numbers of the device and the drive😉My good looking 1702 will probably be the device I want to get working. The video heads on the 1502 have no azimuth but lawn. On the 1700 both heads have opposing azimuth. The loss should therefore be in the range from Betamax to Superbetamax (SONY SL-HF950ES has double azimuth). If the last bolt in front of the head drum were adjustable, more lines could be saved at the bottom. Unfortunately I don't have a loading ring that I can test this on, as both the drives I already have seem to still look good. Let me know if you know how to switch the speed of the capstan. PAL/SECAM switching will probably be more difficult🤣
