Well, winning a meaningless regular season game isn't much consolation for blowing a pennant, but at least they helped keep that clown Lasorda from winning the division that year. If the morons in the Philadelphia front office hadn't sold Robin Roberts after the 1961 season, for apparently no good reason, '64 wouldn't have even been close. Unfortunately, having grown up as a Phillies fan, and having done extensive research on the teams that came before I was paying attention, I've learned that their front office personnel (until the Carpenters hired Paul Owens and Bill Giles) were inept, to say the least.

I was at this game. I am pretty sure my brother said we should go home when the Dodgers had the huge lead but I insisted on staying and we stayed until the end of the game. I remember listening to Ross Porter on the postgame show, he sounded so depressed. But then in 2006, I was at the game where they were losing to the Padres by 4 runs in the 9th. This time I was with my mom and she said we should go but I said we should stay. Then they hit 4 straight HR's to tie it up and then had Nomar win it in the 10th. I've always wondered how many people were at both these games and actually stayed until the end of both of them. Perhaps the greatest collapse and greatest comeback in Dodgers history. This Phillies one was horrible to watch but now I am glad I stayed until the end.

The wierdest thing was that on the 10th anniversary of this game, 8/21/2000, in the Appalachian League in the low minors, a team going into their half of the 9th was trailing 11-3 and also scored 9 runs to win. The main difference was that the team that won that one was the home team, so the game ended as soon as they went ahead. The Dodgers still had one more chance in the bottom of the 9th in the game shown here.

According to Baseball Reference, this comeback, along with a Cubs comeback against the Reds in 1952, are the only times in baseball history where the winning team had a win expectancy as low as 0.01% at one point. Essentially, this was one of the top 2 most improbable comebacks in baseball history.

I remember this game, I started to watch it, and when it was 11-3, I was like, "Well, this is over and I have to get up for school tomorrow," so I turned it off. The next day, I asked one of my buddies what the final score was and he was like, "Phils won 12-11." I thought he was yanking my chain, but sure enough, here it is. Needles to say, I thought twice before ever turning off a game early again.

I was there ... as an L.A. resident and long-time Phillies fan. Found myself sitting along 3B line together with a bunch of Dodger fans. First 2-1 Dodgers lead, then 5-1, then 5th inning; Dodgers with runners on base. I said to the guy next to me, "If the next guy gets a hit, I'm out of here." Next guy got a hit, making it 9-1 ... and I went home. I still have the ticket stub from the game, somewhere.

It's 22 years later but I will still never forget that game...verbally. I was listening to it on radio while playing a video game and had to stop because I couldn't believe what I was hearing. This was probably a few games in since I became a Dodger/baseball fan at 12 and I was furious and nearly threw the radio down or on the floor. Only reason I didn't? It was my mom's. I couldn't believe the Dodgers blew an 11-3 lead by giving up 9 runs in the 9th inning! It still stinks to this day.

This game is the very reason I think the "unwritten rule" of baseball about playing with a lead is hogwash. I have seen games where a team gets mad because the other guy stole a base up by 6 runs in the 7th inning, someone scored on a sacrifice fly up by 5 in the 8th inning, etc. Big comebacks happen in baseball all the time - you should never stop trying to score. It isn't football where you can just hand the ball off and run the clock out.
