Growing up in Central PA, cheesesteaks were a thing. Growing up in Central PA with a mother who was raised on PA Dutch cooking and trying to make some more healthy choices in how she prepared traditional foods made cheesesteak sandwiches something of an exciting meal.
Now, as much as I love my mom's cooking and have fond memories of cheesesteak sandwiches, you really can't get a proper cheesesteak outside of Philly. And when you get one, cheese whiz is NOT an appropriate cheese for them, I don't care what Philadelphians say. The cheesesteak was invented in 1930; cheese whiz wasn't invented until 1953. Use real cheese. It will always taste better and be better for you.
Regardless! The recipe I was using as a base for this was from the Carb Manager app for Keto/low-carb diets. Rather than use onion powder, I used an onion (which is how a traditional cheesesteak is made). Normally, I would prefer Swiss for my cheesesteak, but I had provolone, which is what the recipe called for. Next time, I'm going with my instincts and using Swiss. I could have done with more pepper and maybe some Worcestershire sauce in the beef, but definitely liked the shaved the beef (which is closer to traditional).
So, there ya have it! Philadelphia Cheesesteak skillet/casserole. It's low carb, serves 4, and is very delicious. Let me know if you try it!
