The first class of PHOENIX RAVENS graduated in February 1997. This capability evolved from the Mission Security Teams also known as flyaway security teams established during the 1980s. When 23rd AF separated from AMC to become AFSOC, effective 22 May 1990, its flyaway security mission support capability further evolved into the origins for the SOF DEPLOYED AIRCRAFT GROUND RESPONSE ELEMENT (DAGRE). The difference is PHOENIX RAVEN is airlift mission support security tailored to a single aircraft, whereas DAGRE is essential mission ground support tailored to one or multiple aircraft. BTW, becoming either a PHOENIX RAVEN or DAGRE doesn't result in award of a skill level, or a new Security Forces AFSC or AFSC shredout, or Special Duty Identifier. Both do result in award of a Special Experience Identifier. The PHOENIX RAVEN SEI established 30 April 2001, DAGRE a few years later, circa 2013-2015.

Does being a raven limit your base choices?

No it doesn’t. Ravens can still go to non AMC bases and perform other security forces duties, but it also makes you eligible to apply and get transferred directly to different Raven units without having to do the regular SF mission at that location.
