Context answering some questions: 1) Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (the first game you listened to) is the first game in the series, and originally released in Japan on GBA, but released for the first time in the US on DS, with a (very slightly) enhanced soundtrack. The objection years allude to this. Justice for All is the sequel (the second one), and Trials and Tribulations is the last game in the trilogy. The Great Ace Attorney duology (the last song you listened to) was originally released for 3DS in 2015 and 2017, but arrived worldwide on Steam, Switch, and PS4 in 2021 (the Japanese title was because that video was from when it was Japan-only). Between this original trilogy and that later prequel duology, a 4th, 5th, and 6th "mainline" Ace Attorney have released, and the Investigations duology. 2) Each games' composers: AA1: Masakazu Sugimori (first track you heard today) AA1 DS bonus tracks: Naoto Tanaka AA2: Naoto Tanaka (second track you heard today) AA3: Noriyuki Iwadare (third track you heard today) AA4: (mostly) Toshihiko Horiyama and (for a few tracks) Hideki Okugawa Investigations (1 and 2): Noriyuki Iwadare and Yasuko Yamada AA5: Noriyuki Iwadare and Toshihiko Horiyama PL vs AA: Tomohito Nishiura and Yasumasa Kitagawa AA6: Noriyuki Iwadare and Toshihiko Horiyama Great Ace Attorney (1 and 2): Yasumasa Kitagawa and Hiromitsu Maeba (4th song you heard) 3) Minor Nitpick, but technically "phoenix wright" only applies to 1, 2, and 3, so since you also have the Great Ace Attorney version in here, it might be best to just have "Ace Attorney - Objection" as the title without the "Phoenix Wright"

So, one of the things I really love about the Ace Attorney series is how its soundtrack is effectively its own strategy guide. Like the actual gameplay is going through statements, picking apart wording, comparing facts against evidence, etc, so a lot of the time in the trials is going to be spent just digesting a lot of information. And the way the game is paced there invariably comes a time where things are looking increasingly stacked against you but then this song kicks in and that's kind of your cue to take a breath, and go through everything at your disposal. It's looking for that one loose thread and figuring out how to tug on it just right to have everything come unraveling, and that groove has just conditioned me to start analyzing *everything* in front of me.

The Objection themes could be described as representing "the time you explain the villain why what he said is bullshit". They're not the climax, they're the point where you are at an advantage. The pursuit themes are my favourite on the series. It works so well for the moments where the antagonist or prosecutor screwed themselves, but also when both the defense and the accusation are at each other's throats. This goes hard when Phoenix and Franziska or Godot are fighting hard and objecting at each others on those intense scenes.

As a huge Ace Attorney fan, this video made me so happy! I find it really interesting that you said the 2004 theme sounded more retro than the previous two. That game, Trials and Tribulations, delves a lot into the characters' pasts, so they probably were aiming for a very retro sound!

I love AA, is one of those games I grew up with, for me I have in my heart the first one just because I always remember that sensation when playing the game and getting my first contradiction right in the mark, then as the character goes "Objection" that theme starts playing, it just blown my mind. The fourth one (Is not in this compilation mostly because is called different but same timing when starts playing), that one comes from my personal favorite from the games, even tho if it has a lot of problems. And the third one, T&T has the theme that made me play the games, when I got to know the franchise my first time playing was with a japanese ROM for the GBA of the third game, by pure trial and error I got to pass through the first case and everytime this theme played I knew that I was doing right the stuff, It got really in my head that theme.

This is the music that kicks in when you find the gaping hole in the perjuring witness's testimony and whip out your massive, girthy, throbbing OBJECTION! If you'd like an explanation of the way Ace Attorney music works, there's a great video essay called the Ace Attorney Musical Formula or something to that effect. Objection 2004 os very much of a lower quality. Apparently, Trials and Tribulations was such a huge game that they could barely fit it on the GBA cartridge, and even then they had to make sacrifices. For example, there is a number of recurring characters present in many cases to save on sprites, and that's why the music is of a lower quality too.

You mention that the objection themes are like a tease and I think that really gets at what makes them so great in context. The objection theme usually plays early on in a trial, where youve found an inconsistency, and you get that moment of triumph but the trial is far from over. The pursuit themes play when you really have the bad guys cornered and it feels all the more sweet having been teased by the little victories earlier, and that is captured perfectly just through the music I think.

After that introduction to the AA characters I was hooked and eventually got the AA trilogy on 3DS and now I have all the AA games that they made available on 3DS. Minus the Great Ace Attorney games, that I have on Switch. One day I'll have to put in a request probably for the main theme of Professor Layton and the Unwound Future or for Descole's theme. Ace Attorney is notable for tracks like these that play depending on the situation, with almost every game having its own iteration (the two Great Ace Attorney games being the only ones to share a large portion of the OST). Every game can be expected to have their own version of the Objection theme (one for each character that is playable in the case of more recent entries), the Pursuit theme, the multiple levels of the Cross Examination themes, and Seize the Truth (which generally plays when you’re on the verge of a big revelation).

Honestly if you do any more specific tracks from ace attorney, you should listen them from every game in the series at once. There's only around 10 games, and considering how short each song is, I don't think it's too unreasonable. Maybe 2 parts? (Just in case it isn't clear, every game in the series has certain songs that fit the same "role", eg objection and pursuit, even though they're all different songs)

There’s far more than these four versions, each game has its own version of Objection and some of them even have multiple versions as you jump between main characters. You were right, the first three tracks are from the GBA era of the franchise which were later remade on the DS which is likely where these tracks are ripped from. The final track is from a game set in late 1800’s London which is why the soundtrack is far more orchestral than the franchise’s usual jazz synth sound. The tracks you’ve reacted to in the past are mostly from the DS and 3DS era so that’s probably why you sensed a difference.

The first one you listened to was the first Ace Attorney game, just titled "Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney." The early Ace Attorney games were on GBA, and they sound a lot different from later games that were on DS/3DS. The Ace Attorney series was pretty much all composed by different composers for each game, so the only motifs you'll really find are confined to each individual game. Except The Great Ace Attorney, which references a bunch of old tracks from the original games to make the connections between the protagonist and his descendant (Phoenix Wright)'s story even stronger (Side note: there are remixes of Objection 2004 in Spirit of Justice and Dual Destinies, and they go hard. Recommend checking those out on your own time.)

The tracks in AA often fall into a Purpose when it comes to the music that plays in the Court sections, thus the consistent naming schema across the series Where Pursuit and Cornered are high-energy pieces for the times you have the criminal on the ropes, Objection is the prelude of sorts, it plays when you go "You're full of shit, and here's what proves it" and are asked to take the cast through your logic, such as by answering what detail of the evidence is your proof, why its proof, or indicating a location on a map to make a point of the contradiction The rising maturity is likely intentional, alongside the changing composers, our protagonist grows more sure of himself, confident and steady, over the games Dai Gyakuten Saiban, or The Great Ace Attorney, has a very different musical style meanwhile because it takes place in a whole different era of Japan, thus the more traditional instrumentation Relatedly, the hashtag #GyakutenKenji2 is incorrect, Gyakuten Kenji is the Ace Attorney Investigation - Miles Edgeworth games

I've had some experience with Ace Attorney music, mostly just the first game. The first one really has that thinking feel down super well; I like the chords they sound subtly haunting. I find that the piano chords remind me of some classic fighting games which is interesting. This one is good, I like it and the chiptune feel is good. Now onto Justice For All, this one also gets the thinking feel but it's a bit more light hearted. This one lacks the energy of the first one giving it a different feel which isn't a bad thing, the song feels like it as lower stakes. The bass sounds very nice in this one, I don't mind this track but I don't feel strongly about it. Trials and Tribulation, it feels quite a bit more chiptune and this one has some intensity to it and has a feeling of more stakes and I like the mix in feel with the next section of the song. This one also feels like thinking, I don't know how I feel about the random flourish. That bass line is especially good on this one, I very much like this one. Last but not least the one with the Japanese name, this one feels very dramatic and I like that aspect. It's like something super important is on the line, it doesn't give me as much of a thinking feel like the others but that's ok. This one gives me a bit of a French feel with the accordion (?). I like this one as well. For my favorite I'd say it's a tie between Trials and Tribulations and the last version in this video.

Unless you get really stuck on something (which would be less likely if you have someone to give you hints), these games aren't typically super long. You could potentially get through one pretty quickly if you wanted... I'd recommend at least trying the first game in the series and see how you feel about doing more... Each game is typically split into 4 or 5 cases, which also makes it easy to split up if you wanted... You could do 1 case between other games, to change things up... I don't know, just an idea lol. The stories and characters are normally pretty fun and the music is used well as part of the storytelling, I think.
