Phoksundo - Serene. Turquoise. Pristine wilderness. A place where snow leopard roams wild.
Phoksundo is an alpine fresh water oligotrophic Y-shaped lake in the lap of mountains. It is located in the Dolpa District at an elevation of 3,611m inside the She Phoksundo National Park, which is also the biggest national park of Nepal.
Phoksundo is the second (after Rara) deepest lake in Nepal. Phoksundo Lake is 494 ha (1.91 square mi) in size with maximum length of 5.64 km (3.50 mi) and maximum width of 975m. According to Nepal's Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the maximum depth of the lake is 136.20m.
The village of Ringmo is situated on the lake's southern end. Buddhism and Bon religions are prevalent in Ringmo. There are over 20 stupas in the southern belt, and the Thasung Tsholing Gompa (a 900-year-old Bon monastery) in the eastern side of the lake, where annual prayers and worship are carried out. Past the dam, the waters off the lake plunge over a 167m tall waterfall named Phoksundo Jharana.
Dolpo offers a full package of thrilling adventures and experiences. Trek to one of Nepal's largest and most spectacular lakes, is a short (thanks to flight connections to Juphal from Kathmandu and Nepalgunj) and relatively easy despite the trails being treacherous in some parts of the trek.
I spent total 8 days in this trip (including flight cancellation from Nepalgunj to Juphal), but it could be longer or shorter depending on the number of hours you choose to walk a day and the mode of transportation you take to reach Suligaad, the starting point of this amazing trek.
During my stay in Ringmo, I’ve been lucky enough to see the different faces of Phoksundo lake and the real beauty of Dolpo. The monsoon was still active, which made the weather pretty unpredictable. Sometimes it was sunny with clear sky, and sometimes, it was foggy and cloudy. And the lake kept changing its color depending on the state of the sky color.
I had a great time. I was fortunate enough to witness the Phoksundo Blues in real. It was incredibly beautiful! I still get goosebumps every time I recall the memories from this trip.
I highly recommend this trek to everyone who loves nature, mountains, lakes and trekking.
Thank you for watching.
