I had a career in photography, photo reproduction and printing dealing color management and the capabilities of the included Apple photo app are very impressive and your tutorial very thorough. With regard to color balance and tint, changes to yellow-blue color balance correlate to how the atmosphere / cloud change the color of sunlight at different times of day. Where you’d want to use the Tint slider to shift colors on the green magenta axis is whenever overhead trees or nearby foliage reflect their green light onto the subjects. We don’t notice the green cast when shooting or when editing because the eyes adjust to it based on what we expect the color to look like. On caucasian skin the green cast gives it a dull pallor which can be removed by adjusting tint towards magenta. A green tint can also be added to twilight scenes to give them a cinematic look. A lot can be learned about using color to convey mood by paying attention to color balance and tint when watching movies. With regard to selective color control because of the RGGB pattern of the sensor highly reflective RGB content in a photo, like the red flower and highlights in skin will sometime “clip” and start to lose detail in the Red channel, and highlights in foliage in the Green and sky in the Blue. This can be seen in the color histogram as the color which is clipping running off the right side. In that situation adjusting the color which is clipping lower with selective color, or that channel in curves or levels will reduce clipping and restore normal color balance; e.g. a minus red will remove the waxy yellow burnt out look of overexposed skin highlights.

I am trying to decide if I should switch to Mac from Windows so I wanted to see how the stock photo editor works. You did a great job explaining. One thing I would like to add, in the curves, you have three eye droppers. They set the maximum BLACK-White and Grey points, were you to select the black dropper and hover over the darkest part of the photo and do the same for the white point, it would really punch up the photo.

Well done! I knew you could do it! Just keep exploring! You are correct, if you double click the photo so you're only viewing that particular one, you'll have that "Edit" button in the top right. Also a nice keyboard shortcut is if you have a photo selected by clicking once on it, and then press "enter" on the keyboard, that will take you directly to the editing tools! Have fun and play with all of the editing tools! Just remember that it's all non-destructive and you can always revert to the original photo!

Very helpful, thank you. Question: is there a way to play around and edit a photo but also keep the original as a separate photo?
@Learnwithjoel
Жыл бұрын
Fantastic question @jimmccann6876! All editing within Apple Photos is considered non-destructive. This means that at any time you can revert to the original photo after an edit. This doesn't solve your question however. The only way to keep the separate original photo would be to duplicate it. It's not ideal as it will double the space on your hard drive, but you can certainly do it if you want. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! Excellent tutorial ! Thank you. Can you explain what is the difference between "sharpen" and "definition" adjustments, please ?
@Learnwithjoel
2 жыл бұрын
You're very welcome @AdiZ! Here is what i've noticed with the "Sharpen" and "Definition" adjustments and how I look at it. I'll link what Apple explains the adjustments do below. But here is my hunch based off using the tools. Sharpen - I think this is adjusting each pixel individually. From my understanding, when you sharpen an image, you control each pixel and the edges of that pixel. Sharpen has three sub adjustments: Intensity, Edges and Falloff. If you drag them all to the right and zoom into the photo, you should notice that the picture almost becomes noisy and it doesn't really look the best. Where as if you don't use sharpen, it almost smoothes it out. Definition on the other hand is more of an overall effect of contrast and adjustment of mid-tones on the image. It makes the image "pop" a little more and if you zoom in really far on the photo, you'll notice that it does not adjust each pixel like the sharpen does. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! It helps more than you know and is greatly appreciated! Also if you know someone who may benefit from this video, feel free to share it along! You are an awesome instructor. This has been very helpful. Question: When I edit a photo and click Done, is my original photo kept and well as the edited version?
@Learnwithjoel
2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much @Linda O'Neill! I appreciate the kind words! Think of editing like wearing rose colored glasses. Every edit is non-destructive, meaning that when you edit a photo in Apple Photos and click done, you see the edited version. But at anytime you can revert back to the original that was not altered. Think of the edit more as instructions of how to see your changes. So it doesn't really show you two photos after you've edited, it just shows the edit one with options to revert back to the original. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! It helps more than you know and is greatly appreciated! If you know someone who may benefit from this video, feel free to share it along!

Would you say that photos app is the best app to start with for beginners when it comes on to editing?
@Learnwithjoel
2 жыл бұрын
Hey @Savanna Thomas! Great question! I think if you have a Mac and are new to photo editing, absolutely start with Apple Photos. It actually has some pretty powerful tools to begin with. It will have very similar tools and options that you find everywhere for learning the basics of editing photos. I look at editing in two different ways/goals... 1: Is to edit your photo to make it look like you didn't edit it. The main goal is to tweak it and alter it to make it pop and stand out without overly making it noticeable that it's been edited. You're trying to capture the moment in the most natural way possible. Apple Photos, Adobe Lightroom are great examples of this. 2: Secondly is editing more for the purpose of photo manipulation. This is where you want to not only enhance the picture, but you want to replace the sky, or remove a tree or include someone who was not in the photo to begin with. Apple Photos does not do this. This is where you really take it up a notch and use something like Photoshop. There are many softwares out there that combine a little bit of both. After your comfortable with Apple Photos, I'd look at Luminar AI, Affinity Photo, Pixelmator Pro, Lightroom, Capture One just to name a few. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! Hi Joel - wonderful video as usual. Can you explain - are your base pictures you are editing here in their RAW format? They have so much color and depth and I see that the program can adjust the info. I am experimenting with my Sony Camera in JPEG format and there just doesn't seem to have much "data" to work with in the shadows and the sky. I know I can change my Sony settings to shoot RAW but I wanted to ask first. Thanks. - I have Subscribed and Liked.

Great question @spdunktube! I shoot RAW almost 100% of the time. Majority of the photos in this video are most likely with my Canon 5D mark iv, which I've recently sold and now shoot on a Canon r5. I have never shot with Sony, but I read enough to hear that the color tones can be not as good as Canon. I personally can't verify, just what I've read. Some people don't like to shoot RAW as the files look dull after import as they have no processing done to them, unlike photos taken in JPEG. I prefer to edit all of my photos individually, so that's why I shoot in RAW. I hope that helps! Thank you for your continued support! Joel, what a FANTASTIC overview of the MAC program. I learned so much on how to edit pictures... And I thought I knew a lot already from using earlier versions on my older MAC. Excellent presentation. Thank you! Is there a way to save both the edited picture and original? I find that when I try to use the edited version for my background pic on the MAC it reverts back to the original. Thanks again. Well done.

Hi @Wm Cobb! I appreciate the kind words! So usually in Apple Photos, the moment you edit a photo and exit out of editing mode, it actually behind the scenes duplicates that photo so there is the original and the edited one. When you do this, however, you will not see both, you still still only see one; the edited one. You can alway have the ability to disregard all edits and revert back to the original. If you want to see two photos, side by side, you can always duplicate the photo, but it will for sure start to eat up space on your hard drive! I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! Hi @saraabarreto! Welcome to the Apple Family, and I appreciate the kind words. I'm happy my content is helpful. "Save As" doesn't exist in Apple Photos, but it does in other Applications. In Apple Photos, you will always have the ability to use the "Revert to Original" option for any edited photo. So you could open one photo, make 1,000 changes, click Done and come back a week later and Revert it back to it's original state. What you can't do is retrace the 1,000 edit changes one at a time, unless you're editing in the moment. So if you opened a picture right now and clicked Edit and made 10 changes, you could go to the Edit Menu and Choose Edit Undo through each edit. But that's only as long as you did not click Done. So "Done" is kinda like "Save" If you're looking for "Save As" option where you have two photos edited differently, then you want to "Duplicate" the photo. You can "Right Click" on it and choose "Duplicate" use keyboard shortcut of "Command + D" or find Duplicate from the Help Menu and that will lead you to Image > Duplicate Photo. I hope that helps! Do the pictures always need to be imported and therefore taking the apple cloud space ?
@Learnwithjoel
2 жыл бұрын
Great question @Filip Wawer! So it depends...there is a setting within the Apple Photo Preferences under the "General" tab that says "Import items to the Photos Library". If this is unchecked it means that any photo/video that is imported is referenced and not copied in. So if you imported that file from the desktop and the deleted the file off the desktop, it actually would not be in Apple Photos anymore. When that box is checked it means that all photos/videos are imported into the Library and they're all nice and contained in that one location. So if you imported a file from the desktop and the deleted the file off the desktop, it would still be within Apple Photos. Now as far as your question is concerned, only photos that are within the Apple Photos library will sync to iCloud Photos and take up space. So if you have that box unchecked, any photo that has been imported with it like that will be referenced and in return not in iCloud Photos. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! Outstanding presentation--thank you! Question: if I use the Apple Photo editing tools on a photo shot in RAW and imported into Photos, is the editing process the same as it is in a jPeg photo ?
@Learnwithjoel
3 жыл бұрын
Hi @Grant Fleming! Thanks so much for the kind words! So if you have RAW files imported into Apple Photos on the Mac, the editing tools will be the same, it's just that when you make the edits, it will be more refined because the file itself holds more information that we as humans typically don't see. So when you edit these RAW pictures vs jpegs, you should notice a slight difference when you're making fine adjustments and edits to them. Hope that helps! @Learnwithjoel

Hey @paulinohio! Resizing in Apple Photos isn't the greatest. I'm surprised it doesn't have the full ability to crop and resize to certain resolutions, only currently aspect ratios. Preview on the Mac wouldn't show or contain any edits from Apple Photos, It works independently of it. You should be able to edit the photo in Apple Photos and then export and retain those edit and then bring into Preview to resize. Are the edits not saving when you export? As far as editing tools in Preview, it would be under the menu bar of Tools > Adjust Color. It has a few simple sliders and such in there for manipulating the photos. I hope that helps! @Learnwithjoel
2 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the kind words @Glenn Feroli! So here is what happens when you've set your camera to shoot both RAW + JPG and how it relates within Apple Photos. When you shoot with this setting enabled on your camera, you're pretty much telling it to save both formats (two separate files); uncompressed RAW and compressed JPG. So then when this gets imported into Apple Photos, it actually imports both files. But instead of showing you two duplicates, it just says "JPEG + RAW" in the top left of the photo. You then have the ability to tell Apple Photos which photo you want to use as the "original". This would be the file that actually is edited and such. I am not familiar with any pop-up that you would get though, so not sure what part of the workflow you're prompted for that message, but if you're switching between the JPEG and RAW option within the "Image > Use RAW as Original" then there wouldn't be any change that you would see. I have another video that briefly talks about advanced editing and I touch a little on the concept of RAW vs JPEG photos, and I'll link that below for reference: ADVANCED EDITING in APPLE PHOTOS - A look at how EXTENSIONS & BRUSHES can ENHANCE your PHOTOS! kzitem.info/news/bejne/r254r4ePqGlqmqg I hope that helps! @@Learnwithjoel Hi Joel. Thanks for the comments regarding shooting in both RAW + JPEG. It makes sense how Photos handles that format so I will be changing it in the future. I the meantime, the problem I am having now is when I highlight a particular photo, JPGE + RAW is displayed in the upper left. I then select IMAGE > Use RAW as Original. The message 'Switching RAW/JPG Masters" is displayed in the middle of the photo, making it appear that Photos is making the switch. Not only does nothing happen but the Mac becomes frozen such that I have to restart the computer. Any additional thoughts you may will be greatly appreciated.
