Just wanted to say, the only real reason to pay for a good camera is dynamic range. And imo its the thing that gives you not only a lot of flexibility but a muuuch better result and more pro-looking. Yet I do agree that glass is really important. Whats your opinion on that?

The printer... printing your photos let’s you see them from reflected light rather than emanated light, which introduces the characteristics of the paper, such as whether it’s matte, high gloss, satin finish, pearlescent papers, etc. It’s also exciting to have made a real thing as opposed to a virtual thing. Digital images are great, printed photos are magical.

Alternative to the back pack plate is a good strap. I personally have the peak design camera strap and it makes all the difference since I hate carrying my camera in a bag. My purpose of a bag is to carry my 2 lenses, few filters, sd cards, spare batteries, couple of lights, speed light, gorilla pod, notpad, and other little stuff in the smallest possible footprint possible for my run and gun 24/7 photography life.

On the bag front I've suddenly become a huge fan of the bag inserts you can get. Turn my favourite backpack into a stealth camera bag. I would have said RAW processing software instead of printer. You can out source your printing very easily and you can get around 50 40x30cm prints for the price of a good printer. You add the cost of the ink on top of that and your walls will be filled with photos before the printer would have "paid it self back". And those normal photo printers can do only up to A3 size, which is still quite small so you would have to have bigger prints made in somewhere else anyway. I agree that printing is important though. I feel that photographic process is not complete for an image until it's printed.

Why do we better analyze/appreciate print images over screen images? I agree with James Popsys, but more to it. Yes, it has a lot to do with our subconscious life-long exception of moving images on screen vs our ridge notion instilled in us about visuals in fixed position on paper. But on the same point, but a slightly different twist: the still image on paper is enhanced (has the edge on a screen version) by a further factor since the printed medium is aligned with the aspect of a frozen moment (something that most photography embraces) and for which no other medium does - well certain fine art, yes, but not really equivalent because fine art holds a hand quality and something else, not sure what. If you were to eliminate the “trained” aspect, say a person who never knew a screen before nor a print, (they have had no background like us of years and decades from birth of screen or print) within a second or so of understanding that a screen can shift or disappear visual content, and yet a printed visual remains fixed and “frozen” on the substrate - then even then, the person has a deeper experience with the print than the screen. In a matter of seconds the profound understanding is made, that the image on the screen has a fleeting potential and the print has no such thing; it’s concrete. This is the emphasis, not on a long history of learned notion but more the immediately learned understating of what to expect from each. So in these ways it maybe impossible for the viewer to invest greater value and have the motivation to pick-up the complexity of subtle nuances and overall artistic commodification of the still work. Once again: the concrete format of the doted print seems to be aligned with the still purpose of photography as opposed to the changing screen that lack the print commitment and marriage to the photo. And apart from all these things, our eyes and brain maybe resistant to the intense frequency and bright charge of the screen electronics thus blocking out certain qualities that register only when looking at the printed version. For visual art sake the screen is the current technology we have that’s suited for the format of moving pictures: film and video. ___ As you know projectors have the very much the same illumination qualities and brightness sense on screen as a digital screen. So the reasoned possibilities surrounding expectations, and still purpose on still format are good I suggest - but another interesting aspect of the question to be considered is the fundamental and main difference between screen and print, and that is: transmitted light (in the case of a screen reproduction) and reflective light (in the case of a printed reproduction). Apart from say, photographing a whole picture of subject/s illuminating transmitted light, like the sun or neon lights most all photographers shoot pictures of reflective light. So if alignment of subject and conveyanced formats is a factor, and I’m thinking it is, (just as it’s purported above about the suspension of time in still photos and the enforced mindful suspension of movement in a print) then reflective lit subjects are more natural and appealing in reflected lite reproductions as opposed to transmitted lit reproductions.

One thing that's different between paper and a screen is that the colors on a screen can be quite inaccurate. Another reason is that you want to view it on a medium that is similar to the end product. A screen transmits light while a paper reflects it. Not to mention different lighting conditions etc. I studied things like this for a bit at university while doing my ux masters

I think you’re right about the more ‘disposable’ nature of screen content as opposed to printed (if that’s the right word). When writing for the web you’re encouraged to keep your content much more succinct because people aren’t as comfortable reading on screens for long periods. 300 words is usually a sweet spot for things like blog articles, whereas pieces in magazines can have word counts into the thousands. I reckon it’s a similar thing with images, maybe we subconsciously give more gravitas to printed content rather than digital.

I'm currently using the Atlas Athlete pack ( atlaspacks.com , no affiliation). I've just returned from a month in SE Asia with it. Gear is Sony a9, Zeiss Batis 18mm, 40mm, and 85mm primes, Godox flash and radio trigger. The pack has enough volume to hold hiking/backpacking gear along with the camera stuff, but compresses down nicely when the extra room isn't needed. The hip belt is removable. I took off the belt and left it in my checked luggage because it is cumbersome in the overhead compartment and when getting in and out of taxis, tuk-tuks, etc.: since I was only carrying camera gear (and my CF travel tripod on a couple of side trips) the pack was fine in rucksack mode. Capture clip mounted on left shoulder strap. I'm old-school, so I don't think a photo exists until it has been printed. I haven't printed myself since leaving the wet darkroom behind (still have some notions of large format work, though) and usually get my prints done at Costco unless I need higher quality. Still, I think this is the year I buy my own printer. The Zeiss Batis 2/40 CF is what brought me to Sony, so yes I prioritized glass. That lens is nearly glued to the a9. I was glad to have the 18mm on my trip. I didn't use the 85mm nearly as much as I thought I would, hardly at all, really; in the future, I may cover that range with a 70-200 zoom.

On the subject of printers and displays: It's not you, and it's not just that our brains may be keyed to see video content on a screen. There is 100% a scientific reason your photos look better printed than on a screen -- color depth and calibration. Inherent to most screens on the market is the straight up limitation of what the screen can reproduce. Your standard screen has what they call '32-bit color', so-named because each pixel on the screen can read 4 values (red, green, blue, and alpha) each of 8 bits in length (eight 1s and 0s) to uniquely express 16,777,216 (2^24) colors, at a maximum of 256 (2^8) discreet levels of brightness. Here's the problem: the average human eye can differentiate a LOT more than 16 some-odd million colors. In many cases, this is irrelevant. Color-sensitive work, however, is a completely different story. So, how do you help fix this? Well, monitor manufacturers have taken the easy route of 'bigger nail? bigger hammer.' and have 'professional' lines of displays that bump up from 8 bits of color per channel to 10 bits of color per channel. What this means is that these 10-bit panels can produce 1,073,741,824 (2^30) unique colors -- TWO full orders of MAGNITUDE more -- at potentially 1,024 discreet levels of brightness. In addition, many of these monitors will also have an even larger 'look up table' (say, a 14-bit lookup table, or LUT,) which means the monitor can take what it's TOLD to display, and then make some smart approximations and evaluations from a table of 4,398,046,500,000 unique values to get as close as possible within the 1.073 billion colors it can actually display on the screen. You'll often see this wider range of color reproduction paraded about in marketing as 'color gamut coverage' like 100% sRGB or 99% Adobe RGB. These gamuts give you standardized ranges that some programs and printers use to standardize reproduction across the board (eg, an image on one properly-calibrated 99.9% Adobe RGB-compliant display will look as identical as possible as the same image on another properly-calibrated 99.9% Adobe RGB-compliant display). One unavoidable truth I'm sure you're aware of is that most professional printers are printing in CMYK, which is obviously a fundamentally different color mixing basis than RGB, and there's just some unavoidable difference there. Some of these color gamuts attempt to give some measure of comparison for telling you 'how close' the monitor will be able to replicate a physical printout, particularly if you view an image and print that image in compliant gamuts, so the display and printer will be told how to best reproduce the data in the image on each medium for a best-case-scenario match. The other thing you can do is monitor calibration. Even on a conventional 32-bit display, the color accuracy of the display can vary wildly even on the same model coming off the production line, particularly on lower-end displays that aren't calibrated with any measure of care, if at all. The aforementioned 'professional' displays will often come from the factory pre-calibrated, with a calibration result sheet for the specific display in the box, letting you know how well yours fared in testing. You can also buy USB-connected color calibration tools to calibrate any display and potentially get better results out if it, as well as to keep any display calibrated as age changes its performance. Now, if only it were as easy as buying a 10-bit display and plugging it in. The BIG asterisk is that you will need a graphics solution on the computer feeding the signal that ALSO supports 10-bit color, so make sure you've either already have, or are able and willing to upgrade to one that supports it -- this is often found in professional graphics lines, but is not always on consumer-grade graphics solutions, so do the homework to make sure. I would also say that *generally* speaking when you're looking at pro-grade displays, you will *often* get what you pay for, although the sticker shock can be real (weigh it against the operating cost of a printer, obviously.) As it turns out, when manufacturers put the time and money into quality assurance and calibration along with the added cost of manufacture due to having to be pickier about what panels are 'good enough' to ship, they often also don't skimp on ANYTHING, so you often are also signing up for most of the bells and whistles, and usually a minimum 27" panel size and 2K or 4K resolution along with it. Asus, Dell, and BenQ (in no order of superiority) are probably the better-known manufacturers of high-end pro-grade displays. The final note, and exception to ALL of this: A monitor, no matter how good, cannot replace the feeling of ink on paper in the hand. However, this is a case much like that of an eBook or audio book -- it is not inherently better than a print copy, merely a different experience with highly subjective advantages and disadvantages.

You probably don't need waist straps for your Fuji kit. But try lugging around the FF equivalents in body/ies and lenses. That's where waist & chest straps make life a lot easier.

Just released is a bag from PGYTECH (the Onemo) who actually make the best, highest quality, accessories for DJI drones. This might interest you - tons of great ideas (inc. drone compartment) and .. no waist belt (which rules it out for me but you mentioned you don't like them). You'll find reviews on YT. No association ! www.pgytech.com/collections/onemo-backpack

Screens are bad because most are around just 2 megapixels. Even 4K screens are just 8 megapixels. LCD screens are also backlit which means sharpness and color fidelity are poor. especially blacks are almost never truly black.. (CRT screens, plasma screens and oled screens are not backlit, but they still need to be in a dark room for true blacks) If you are taking photos with your 24 megapixel camera just for putting them onto the internet you are wasting your money. (I mean sensor-money; optics is another discussion) A good printer can put those 8 megapixels in a few inch squares.

This may have been said, but I'm not going to wade through almost 600 comments to verify. Paper vs. screen - 2 things. (1) transmitted light vs. reflected light and (2) resolution. Unless you have a bleeding-edge (technology as well as cost) monitor, you will never get the DPI from a monitor that you will get from a good printer.

Must agree I like my peak design clip as well although with a battery grip installed and a small lens attached it does rotate forward as lot. It stops all that pressure on my neck and still keep the camera handy. Bags are a hassle as a shoulder injury means I can no longer wear a backpack except for a short time. So have switched to a Thule messenger bag which I used over the weekend and it was very comfy although tricky to pack efficiently. Printing is nice but I only have so much wall space. Glass keeping it simple so far with an 18-135 STM and a Sigma 50mm f1.4 and the nifty 50mm f1.8. I do have a couple of yongnuo strobes and they are fun to play with for macro and portrait photography. Tripod useful for those but rarely taken out of the house.

So have to add that the PD Capture Clip doesn't work so well if you're female and not tall. I bought one thinking it looked like a great solution compared to taking the backpack off, stowing the camera, and then getting it out again BUT I've been unable to find a comfortable place. I certainly could not mount the clip as low as you have, and higher---well, there's not much higher available. I tried the waist belt of my pack, but then my leg hits the lens with every stride. My camera isn't large as cameras go but my Olympus OM1-2 with my favourite Oly 12-100 lens isn't comfortably on the Capture Clip. PS: I selected the camera body after choosing the lens. It just felt better in my hands than the other options.

I only eat Magenta meat. My list would be more practical. 1. Good sturdy tripod legs/head, this goes for both video and stills. This is your number one first investment and makes the largest improvement to your photography. If you have 1000 dollars, put it in the tripod first. 2. Quality color corrected display. Taking photos is step one. The development process is step two. Since we don't have physical light rooms anymore, you must take care of the display element. You should also have the ability to black out your room to eliminate color hue and reflections on screen. 3. Now we get to the printer. The printer is the second step of the development process. We edit on the screen and then we develop onto the paper. It is important because the image on the screen is still digitized pixels and does not exist in reality yet. Once you print your image, it becomes reality. You will also notice that printed images have a much more life like quality to them. This is because the individual pixels have been averaged into ink blobs giving the image a much more painterly effect. This is also why we sharpen images because your print will lose sharpness as the ink bleeds around on the paper. 4. Glass, good glass. Prime glass. Zooms are fine for speed work, but if you want quality get primes. It will change your photography fundamentally. 5. A quality full frame body. APS-C is fine for quick shots like sports and some candid wild life, but a full frame sensor is essential for top quality. Not at the top of the list but it matters. APS-C vs Full Frame is much like Zooms vs Primes. APS-C are often faster, but full frames are much better image quality.

I have just bought the G9 😃 and can’t wait to use it properly (still working out the settings). I’m looking at getting 1 good lens, what would you suggest. I take photos as a hobbyist and photograph street, city scape and trying portrait. I love prime lenses and have a few for my E5 Mkii. Not a lover of landscape, but love your videos and humour. Thanks 😊📸

Interesting comments on the printer, but I read another explanation - which comes I believe from Marshal McLuhan's son (surely you know about Marshal McLuhan... the communication guru / theorist of the 1960s 1970s...). At any rate the explanation goes like this.... on a screen we look at light dots vs on paper we look at reflected light. Because of this, our minds react differently upon looking at both type of medium. As such, it is better to use a printed version of a text for revision than using a screen version as we are more critical. Maybe it comes from using different brain areas.... at any rate, it is true that when making text revisions, it is more accurate when using text printed on paper, so it must therefore be the same for photos...

Those camera clips are especially good for event photographers. I've usually got 3 cameras on me me (low light zoom, wide angle and a short telephoto) for events because I can't be faffing around with menus and lens changes. Trying to do that with straps instead of clips is a nightmare

Spend the money on an extra good tripod. Not that a $250 tripod will be terrible, but you'll be happier if you upgrade a bit. You don't have to go carbon fiber, just get something that's built like a tank. You're not likely going to ever replace a tripod unless it breaks. So, buy one that's going to last.

Consider this... Most today's screens are 1920x1080, which equates to around 2 Mpx. You basically throw away over 16 Mpx worth of data when viewing your photos on screen, and that's even BEFORE you throw in vertical black bars when viewing photos on a 16:9 monitor. That's why prints are almost always sharper than displayed photos.

Which printer is that? I have one that looks like that - But it was only $200. Now the ink about kills me every time. So I think we’re paying the same amount for the ink, but I wanted a printer that was just a printer, and I wanted a wide carrots printer because I want to print out big stuff.

The comment about 'not liking waist straps'; your shoulders aren't designed to carry lots of weight for prolonged periods of time; your hips are. Google how to fit a pack to yourself so the weight of your pack sits (mostly) on your hips. Your musculoskeletal system will thank you.

Great tips as always 🙂 Studio looks great too! I'll probably get the peak design clip as well but it's likely going to hold my Vlogging camera while I have my main camera on a wrist strap. At the moment I often have the Vlogging cam fixed on a tripod and carry it with it, but I like tripods as much as you do... Cheers from Germany 🙂

Like the clip idea. Mate did and owning a pro DSLR and back up with battery grip. He phoned me after he had his camera come off and cost a fortune only but of luck was he just put a nifty 50 on to cut as much weight and swinging around was happening. Ohh no don’t get sucked in to the new age minimising idea that was brought out by famous artist long time back. But like most of these trends that they believe they created during a phase or unicorn ride over a rainbow. Is old ideas that often had nothing to do with there creative turn on making people dump lots of sometimes great memories or things that can be reused. To feel the world is going to change lol. Love seeing your bags are much like mine lol. The one will come lol.

Well, glasses or lenses first is like the hen or the egg question. Apart that is does depend on your objectives and how involved you are I would sum it a good camera body and three to four essential lenses is what you need and then invest in glass - because 5 MP more doesn't necessarily improve your picture quality, that can only be done by mindset and glasses. By the way have a look a t Manfrotto bags - I have two of them large and small and they do their job pretty well;

Screen vs Print might be the resolution. Usually screen is approx 72 dots per inch while print it often approx 300 dots per inch. But just as you said no scientific data to back that up.
