It's sad looking back at this and hearing that the children that just experienced something traumatic are the ones who are telling their city council how to improve laws to prevent this from happening again. I have been saying the same. The Columbine tragedy should have been the point where schools took extreme measures to ensure our children’s safety! Long ago, bulletproof glass should have been installed- inside and outside of all buildings. Metal detectors should have been installed. Clear backpacks should be mandatory, and safe rooms should have been built in every classroom. We live in a different reality now, but our school systems prefer to use money on useless, unnecessary renovations! When are our children’s lives going to matter, when it’s too late! Gas stations and banks have bulletproof glass…its infuriating, shameful and heartbreaking our children aren’t guarded.

America has the highest rate of children living in single parent homes. I've said for years that they need to have metal detectors at the front doors of all schools and any side doors should only unlock from the inside of the buildings. It might not be 100% fool proof, but it would be a heck of a lot better than what most of these schools are doing to protect these kids, which is nothing. Something needs to change now, not 5 years from now.

And then you get teachers like the ones in Ulvade who prop open the side doors with a rock--doors that would otherwise lock when closed.

We had locks inside on our main doors but they let everyone in. And then the doors all round the school were usually left unlocked. I never felt safe.

They need to arm teachers. What if they gave teachers and students lessons on shooting? Imagine something happening to the teacher, then a student picks up her gun and kills the school shooter. Children can be very smart, and surprising.

@@crimson-crimson stop. That was B.S. first spread by the police trying to cover their own failures (like deciding not to shoot the creep carrying a rifle towards a schoo.) This has been known for a long time, stop spreading that awful lie about the teacher. You can look up security footage from inside the hallway, the door was closed when the shooter entered the school. She kicked the rock out and closed the door before he got to it. It was supposed to lock automatically when closed but didn't, that's not her fault. Obviously she expected it to function properly, that's the reason she had it propped open at first - so she wouldn't get locked out.

@@crimson-crimson lies. The door was closed but the lock failed and could only be checked from the outside. Less cop propaganda, more facts from the public congressional hearing that exposed the cop cover up

This building has a tragic mark on the lives of many and soon the building will be destroyed. It's a sad thing when a school needs to be torn down because of a tragic event like that.

Why does she keep saying “cowarding” ? Lady, they were hiding - I would not call or use any words with the word “coward” in it in regards to the victims or survivors.

Even if you took away guns people would just try mass stabbings it's not like it would end

Bear with me. During the trial of the shooter at the Aurora movie theater, evidence was presented of his plans to commit mass murder. He ruled out a chemical/biological agents, as well as explosives because they require a lot of research and the risk of harming himself before using them on others. He also considered using knives, but decided against it because he would get too few kills. He chose firearms because they were the easiest, quickest way to kill so many people. Even a demented psychopath understands how hard it is to kill so many people by stabbing. No one is claiming gun control can prevent all murders, or even all mass murders. But it's absolutely delusional to think there wouldn't be a significant impact on how many people will be killed by these people who want to commit mass murders. And to be fair, it's totally valid to believe that the right to own firearms is too precious and 17 dead students is a price you're willing to accept to maintain that right. Just don't try to weasel out of saying that with some clearly B.S. "but knives" argument.

More gun laws won't solve anything. This world is changing. Drugs, alcohol, are taking over our country. Gun laws only affect law biding citizens who obay them. Nut heads, drug dealers, criminals are not going to obay anything.

Exactly. Saying guns kill people is like saying that my pencil failed my test. I USED the pencil to fail the test, but I was the one who failed it, not my pencil
