This is an excellent example of why, 15 years after her passing, she is burning up youtube and making legions of new fans. Where is her estate and why are they not putting together a box set of music and appearances? Beauty, gorgeous voice and mesmerizing stage presence......hello!

Phyllis is killing it! She looks like an angel in that white ensemble. So beautiful & ethereal. She always weaved a spell on her audience. She is reminiscent of the greatest of the greatest jazz divas. She's completely in a class by herself. That kind of beauty & talent is a rare thing, especially today. Thanks sooo much for uploading this...Phyllis did some of her greatest work in this production!!! :-)

I wonder how much an artist of Phyllis Hyman could make back then per show. I bet girls would make millions now a days. She definitely deserved that how hard she worked so many many dates, plus she still toured after.

kleo I would strongly recommend reading 'Strength of A Woman' which gives a really in depth look into her life. It gives you a picture of how much she made on the road per show. Touring is definitely where the money is at nowadays, but that wasn't really the case for a lot of singers back then. If I'm not mistaken, $10K-15K is what Phyllis was making per show at the height of her career before overhead costs, staff salaries, and all pre-tax. It should be noted that Livemaster wasn't a thing back then which meant that artist had to look for a booking agency. Obviously with more money and fame you have the chance to hire the best booking agency that money can buy and leverage your fame for arenas and stadium bookings. You'd have to be on a Madonna level to book stadiums back then. Phyllis never really capitalized too much on touring because like most artist back then, touring was seen as a grueling task being on the road for nearly a quarter of the year or half of it away from family and friends. She did start doing a lot more shows towards the end of her journey to pay the bills and whatnot even though she made less than she did at her peak, and by that point it was obvious her star was fading which meant less lucrative shows, she was having issues with her label as it fell apart, she was absolutely fed up with the machine that is the music industry, and the curtains simply drew near as her heart grew weary with the loss of her mother and grandmother within a month.

KamiSekai This is true. I have the book. Even at the height of her career, Phyllis made pennies compared to what mediocre “singers” make today. Even reality stars make more for club appearances today than she made back then per show, pre-tax and staff salaries. Around 92 or 93, she had to stop renting her apt in Philadelphia and get rid of most background singers to stay afloat. No doubt that she deserved to be paid sooooo much more per show than she actually got. So much more!

The Hines Brothers started out as a trio with their father in a group called "Hines, Hines and Dad." Maurice Hines, who opens this piece is currently starring in the revival of "Sophisticated Ladies" in Washington, DC.

@Tomcat2121 That's the question we're all asking. TVOne has removed the Unsung videos so I assume that DVD is coming soon. LOL.

The are 2 HInes brothers, the late Gregory & the living Maurice. They started out as a team. Mr. Hines is currently in pre-production for Yo Alice, the new urban hip-hop fantasy he conceived and will direct and choreograph.

Not Gregory. Maurice, Gregory's brother. They were once part of a father and son team called "Hines, Hines, and Dad.
