My 87yr old father in love gets a call from his insurance co. Every month telling him to stop taking his needed medication against his doctors advice and behind his back. Thank God he lives with us and we keep him on his doctor's plan.

Ok, so... you don't talk about ANYTHING related to assisted suicide. Only say "it's cheaper to provide" drugs that kill you, without taking into account the patients life. Doctors are there to help patients, ease their suffering, and in some cases keep them alive. When a life has no quality, then the second option can be eliminated. That leaves easing suffering, but an individual can only suffer so long. When it becomes unbearable to suffer, (brittle bones, blindness, deafness, lower liver, kidney, heart, etc.), functions, what then do you do doctor? Do you keep a patient alive to suffer, or aid in helping them to die? Answer these for me.

Health care professionals are to help save or sustain life. If people are battling depression would you help by giving them a gun to kill themselves if they feel that they have no quality of life?

@@victorramos8152 PAS is not for people with depression - It is for people who have no realistic options to cure and who are in immense, intractable pain. The choice is not between life or death - It is between several more months of insufferable pain then death or death on their terms with consent and dignity.

I have been talking about this for two years! Thank you for speaking out. My mom was urged daily and practically forced into hospice by her doctor. I ordered him to stay out of her room after I caught him telling her it could all be over by tonight. This is a practice that is now running rampant. Think about this...with Obamacare, Medicare and Medicaid the "Government" is essentially in the INSURANCE business.

Clearly your mother did pass away, was it good she was forced into it or that she go it alone? By alone I meam without the input of her children? Did she choose it herself? There are many questions I have of your situation, but without a full backstory I can't see what you're getting at? Curious though, while you're mom was in hisoice did she complain of pain, of suffering? Was she given drugs to help her pain? If she was, did you ever see if she herself was in pain? If she herself was suffering? In a situation like that, if I were my grandpa suffering from pain after having medicine, I'd take the assisted suicide. He didn't get it, but even under high doses of morphine and doing simple gestures, I knew how he felt. Did you feel the same when you saw your mother? Did you feel all of what I said in this post?

Each of us have the right to leave this world in peace and wilth dignity. Anybody who has been witness to a loved one, or anybody/anything else for that matter, just how heart wrenching it is to watch them slowly suffer. I mean we treat our pets better than that. When all hope is gone and suffering is present, better to leave this world in peace and with dignity, than the alternative, which leaves a certain, last bit of power in the victims hands.

This is a sad but interesting topic - suicides. By the way, on the question of whether a person can kill himself with his own hands without technical devices, an unknown person on the Internet wrote that this is quite possible, but for this you need to do several things in the following sequence, we quote: “1) find a bed or other convenient place, lie on your stomach; 2) to make a series of deep and very fast breaths and exhalations (hyperventilation of the lungs) until dizziness, circles before the eyes and clouding of consciousness begin; 3) then, while holding your breath while exhaling, lie down on your elbows as soon as possible, bending your arms under your neck, and with your neck closer to the lower jaw, lie on the edge of the palms, substituted with the letter “V” so that the upper part of the carotid arteries is bridged - loss of consciousness should occur (deep fainting) from a combination of previous hyperventilation of the lungs and clamping of the carotid arteries, then suffocation should occur, but without torment, since it will occur in an unconscious state. Such is the unusual point of view. Who thinks about this? Is it possible? .....

The doctor in this video is explaining how it is difficult to receive what is needed for life saving treatment; instead of being given this, physician assisted suicide is recommended. The doctor believes this is wrong because if there is a way to save a life, he will do anything in his power to make that happen. I believe an important part of this video that is missing is the patient’s perspective. Does the patient want the life saving treatment or do they want physician assisted suicide? Advocating for the life saving treatment honors the ethical principle of beneficence, as it would be benefitting the doctor taking care of the patient, the patient whose life was saved and the loved ones of the patient. On the other hand, physician assisted suicide honors the ethical principle of patient autonomy. If the patient desires this course of action and it is approved, then the patient had a say in their treatment plan and has autonomous control. Having a long conversation with the patient about which route they want to take is the duty of the physician and ethical decision making can be made from there.

This doctor provides no specifics about his allegations, so no one should take his unverifiable claims seriously. For example, he does not name the "life-saving procedures" the insurance companies allegedly refused to cover. These procedures could be experimental and untested, which insurance companies do not cover regardless of whether you live in a state where medical aid in dying is authorized or not. He also does not name the insurance companies that allegedly spoke to him or the names of the patients allegedly impacted or what terminal disease they had. Perhaps the reason for these omissions is that he was an avowed opponent of medical aid in dying before he made this video (see Las Vegas Review story posted at: www.reviewjournal.com/news/2017-legislature/foes-of-nevada-right-to-die-bill-turn-out-in-force-for-protest/).

Ms. Nickel: Dr. Callister could reveal patients' names if they signed waiver to HIPPA laws. In addition, he could name the insurance companies and provide evidence in writing and redact patient names. Given his public opposition to this medical aid in dying before he made these claims and the fact that these patients live in CA and OR and he lives in Nevada, I have question if he really is their doctor, so he needs to provide some proof of claims. I have read Hippocratic Oath. It is about 2,500 years-old (Hippocrates lived between 460 and 370 BCE), so today it is rarely administered in its original from, if at all, because it is outdated and would prohibit surgery altogether: "I will not use the knife, not even on sufferers from stone, but will withdraw in favour of such men as are engaged in this work." www.doctorsreview.com/history/is-the-oath-outdated/
