_"Special Relativity : The book by A P French."_ While I agree that French is very good for its emphasis on experimental results, it is a bit old-fashioned. Taylor and Wheeler's _Spacetime Physics_ takes a more modern approach.

1. is dreadful for undergraduates, OK for graduates; there are better alternatives like Introduction To Classical Mechanics Paperback - 2009 by David Morin 3. is very old fashioned, doesn't have exercises; Quantum Mechanics by Griffiths is far better. 7. is very good but increasingly outdated. Relativity made Relatively easy by Andrew Steane is superb; he's a lecturer at Oxford and has a presence on Physics Stack Exchange.

My first Physics book that I got and refer to a lot is Fundamentals of Physics by Halliday, Resnick, and Walker. I got the 10th edition extended. I find it useful for formal instruction compared to the not so rigorous, in-depth KZitem videos I watched before. It's hailed as the best first-year textbook for Physics/Engineering undergrads like myself (although, the community college I attend doesn't strictly use it). It's my starting point in Physics Literature, so I'd like to say thank you very much for the recommendations! I'm quite eager to beef up my physics knowledge as much as possible before I take the rest of my courses.

How about Fundamentals of Physics by Halliday and Resnick? It is widely considered an excellent textbook and has been used by generations of beginning physics students. It really helps you understand and grasp the concepts. Simple problems are discussed as examples which are completely related to daily life activities. If you get the extended edition, it goes all the way from Newton's laws to electrodynamics and some basic special relativity and quantum mechanics. It's the only introductory physics textbook you'll need.

Hmm, depends on what you'd be learning it for - if you're just after a qualitative sense of the theory then 'Quantum' by Manjit Kumar is your best bet, or maybe '6 Easy Pieces' by Feynman (both covered in part 1) while if you're after a quantitative understanding then Binney's 'The Physics of Quantum Mechanics' is a good introduction (and there's a playlist of his lectures on the subject on my channel).
@bensparrow3356

UNDERGRADUATE -Mechanics : Anything with a lot of examples (Taylor is pretty standard, though it's pretty hard to screw up Newtonian physics), plus Feynman Lectures will be good enough! -E&M : Electrodynamics by Griffiths -Quantum Physics : Griffiths gives a good introduction to wave mechanics but I wouldn't reccomend this past the introduction to quantum mechanics (great for if you're not planning to go to grad school though!) . Townsend is a much better transition to graduate level physics in my opinion. -Thermal and Statistical Physics : Thermal Physics by Schroeder -Particle Physics: Elementary Particles by Griffiths GRADUATE -Mechanics : The standard here is typically Goldstein, which is great for problems and examples, but I think Landau Volume I does the theory better. -E&M and Special Relativity : Same idea as Mechanics, usually Jackson is taught, and he's fine but Landau Volume II can help with the derivations. -Quantum Physics : Modern Quantum Mechanics by Sakurai -Statistical Physics : Statistical Physics of Particles & Fields by Kardar w/ supplement from Landau Volume V -Quantum Field Theory : QFT by Peskin and Schroeder -General Relativity : Tensor Calculus for Physics by Neuenschwander and Relativity by Max Born

This is quite an unusual, yet great, list of books. Some of the books that I liked the most when I was an undergrad in physics were: 1- introduction to quantum mechanics, Griffiths 2- classical mechanics, Taylor 3- Electrodynamics, Griffith 4- introduction to new clear and particle physics, Das and Ferbel 5- Mathematical methods, Boas 6- An introduction to error analysis, Taylor 7- A general relativity workbook, Moore 8- Statistical mechanics, Salinas (this is more of a graduate level book, so I wouldn't recommend it unless you've passed all of your other math and physics courses successfully)

Absolutely do further maths A2 over chemistry if you have the choice. As for preparing for the PAT, do all the past papers available on the Oxford Physics website, and as well I'd recommend lots of senior maths challenge papers. As for the interview, stay calm! That's the best advice I can give. Remember that it's an opportunity to have a really interesting chat with a world-leading academic in your field of interest. Also, try and organise a practise interview with your teacher if at all poss.

I'm about to start my degree in Physics this January and am reading Susskind's Theoretical Minimum for Quantum mechanics as a refresher. Have you read this? How does it measure up to the others from the perspective of someone who's been there, done it and worn out the t-shirt? I think it serves well. Everything is explained clearly, it even goes into some calculus, which I was really shaky with, but it is suggested for people who wanted to do physics and never did, so it might not be the best.

If you're still interested, while Simon's recommendation is probably very good, "Gravitation" by Misner, Thorne, and Wheeler is considered LEGENDARY in physics circles, a bible of general relativity. A physicist once said, "Gravitation' is such a prominent book on relativity that the initials of its authors MTW can be used by other books on relativity without explanation." However, it is a very long and dense book, at 1200 pages. It is intended for Graduate level and above, so yeah.

Im looking for a comprehensive physics book for engineering and scientist university level with all the natural laws, smart tricks and tips, a book where you can go back and remind yourself of basic formulas and such. Maybe someone knows what Im looking for? // Thanks

I had a book like this in first year, and I'm really sorry but I have completely forgotten what it was called! It was an American textbook, about 1000 pages long with a red cover with a lightning bolt and written by about three or four authors. I'm so sorry but that's as much as I can remember - if its name comes to me I'll be sure to post back!

Thanks Simon, no worries! I have found a couple of different books not a red one with a lightning bolt doh. Some of them costs like twice as much for some reson or even three times the cost and I can't see why.. Have found one especially thats from Pearson College or Uni? And Uni. texts are often censored so you can't get a sample of the text, that makes it little bit tricky. Thanks anyway!
