As a woman, the “man written by a woman” guy made me laugh so gd hard and caused me genuine discomfort 😭 whenever the internet says a dude is the “female gaze” or “written by a woman” it’s almost always some guy exploiting basic levels of empathy for women and expecting applause for it.

Yeah, as an ace person I think acephobia is an incredibly revealing prejudice. Lack of sexuality is still considered a deviation from the heterosexual norm in the same way homosexuality is. It’s such a, for lack of a better word, unobtrusive form of sexuality that the only explanation for acephobia is that you are uncomfortable with anyone who doesn’t fit the societal norm. This is obviously also the reason for any kind of homophobia, biphobia, etc, but it becomes more obvious when it comes to a sexuality that truly doesn’t affect anyone

is EDS considered a rare condition? I've met so many people just in the last few years who have it, I wonder do you think it's super underdiagnosed still and it's just a coincidence that I've met quite a few, or are people likely to only get a diagnosis in adulthood because of how hard it is to get doctors to listen, so I've just happened to meet a lot of folks recently getting a diagnosis in young adulthood and they're more likely to share it because they're excited to have a diagnosis at last? Sorry if that doesn't make sense, I'm trying to word this 😂

i was kind of self conscious about being an "emotional guy" but yeah i do think this podcast gives me a sense of comfort in part because youre two dudes showing this kind of friendship and vulnerability with each other and the internet. ive been watching sad boyz for years and i do feel like i have grown a lot as a person in that time (not like.. completely due to the show but its definitely a positive influence you know) and i do feel more in touch with my feelings and myself than i was when i was a teenager watching you guys. now im actually working on my mental health and myself... something i had barely begun to do when i first started watching. that isnt completely due to sad boyz, but i do think you guys helped me in considering that a lot of things i dealt with growing up were undiagnosed neurodiversity. im not sure how long it wouldve taken me to come to terms with that sort of thing and trauma and other stuff like that if i saw less people being open about it. i also feel like i have a better grasp of what i want from friendships now, and i think that i now have a circle of guy friends i can connect with in a similar way to the relationship you guys show on sad boyz, which im very grateful for

Circa 2000, there was a boy-band product called B4-4 (because there were 3 of them). I was working my first job at a multiplex movie theatre in Richmond Hill, Ontario the summer before college. Due to the nature of the job, we had a printed schedule of when each showing ended so we could figure out which theatres to clean in what order. So my co-worker and I are walking down the corridor, and I'm looking at the schedule when some rando with frosted tips yoinks it out of my hand while his two buddies erupt in laughter. I demand it back, and when they try to start a game of keep-away with it, I threaten to summon someone to expel them from the premises. They all got faux sad, then ran down the hall to 'sneak into' a showing of Chicken Run (didn't care, not my problem). Once they were gone, my friend leans over and says, "Don't you recognize those guys? They're B4-4." To which I replied, "Figures. They're twats." And that's how I met a boy band.

Regarding Anastasia’s points on the intensity of “man written by a woman”, i think this is something I’ve noticed online more and more over the years. People yearning for this entirely intense, performative relationship… not knowing how a relationship actually is. We are very disconnected from one another. Time is constantly feeling like it’s running out. The world is not nearly as kind as we once thought it was. So, when we find someone we want to have in our lives, people tend to want this intense “all or nothing” attitude with people. Friends can’t just be people you see every once in a a while, they need to be there all the time and hangout every week. Romantic partnership can’t be an exploratory experience, it needs to be marriage “we loved happily ever after”. What I’m saying is people yearn for intense experiences because they don’t even get regular experiences. We want it all or none at all, it seems. And it’s sad that people don’t know what it’s like to be just okay with things as is. Adding on to this, the later conversations of what people “truly want” in the pod is exactly what I wish people online understood. Maybe they do understand. Maybe they can separate reality from the internet/fiction. But I’m not entirely sure if younger people get that nuance. That this is all simply fantasy and that the real people around you are cool and good (most of the time). Media literacy is at an all time low, and I wonder if we did it to ourselves… More Anastasia please!!

Idk, I don't think it's necessarily a new or a more recent phenomenon to want heightened emotions in the romance genre. The 90s had The Notebook, the 80s had bodice rippers, the 1800s had Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights (gothic romances, sure, but romances with intense feelings all the same). Heightened intensity is part of the point of the genre. It's like how most people wouldn't want to shoot someone, but it's fun to watch an action movie.

I think the biggest problem with the whole possessive/weird romance isn't that it exists and that people like it, because there are hundreds of examples of content people really love in fiction that they hate irl (horror movie-type thrills, gore, actual murder, etc) BUT. but. too many people see this messed up stuff happen to, say, Bella and Edward in the fictional vampire universe of Twilight and think "I want this to happen TO ME. IN REAL ACTUAL LIFE. where is MY Edward?" and THAT is not good or okay and frankly pretty scary!

Remember watching the 4400 on Netflix in like 2013 when Netflix still felt kinda early and I remember how it got increasingly more unhinged over time

as a 19 year old guy, this podcast is SUCH a refresher. its a good reminder that it's okay to be open with friends and to allow myself the room needed to heal from past traumas and that its okay to self reflect and improve in a healthy manner

Jarvis's take on disliking potatoes in breakfast burritos like it combines all of the classic breakfast options into one. But I see what you're saying, like it takes work to have the right potatoes. But it is messed up that it's a giant cylinder of potato thats too much.

Anyone else remember all the marketing around Left Behind before the TV release in the early 2000s or is my memory tainted by my heavily religious grandparents seeking stuff out? I don't know if I ever watched it but I have vivid memories of the little clip of the plane crashing bc the pilot got raptured lol. Kind of the opposite of the 4400

I have the exact same situation as Jordan! I’m doing well with my mental healthy and my meds, but I cannot get my sleep schedule right even though it’s very clearly messed up for years now. Also I’m a super night owl, once it hits evening my brain turns on and I get a ton of work done. Anything before that I’m just slow and unproductive

there is nothing grosser than when someone replied to 'i love you' with 'but not in the way i love you' like, this man a few videos (fanfic/book chapters, etc) back didn't even know what love was or felt like and now he is sure he has the most capacity for love and no one could understand his intense feels. tbh it reminds me of fanfics back when i was a teen. i think this appeals to teens a lot moreso than adults, because the red flag creepiness is more apparent to adults who, unfortunately, have been in the position of this kind of sword guy looking dude having way too intense, scary emotions and how dangerous that can be. teenagers are less likely to, and have obsessiveness they associate with love.

Jarvis, i, too. Lately, I have been having the worst relationship with food. It's so bad i gained 30 lbs in 2 months. I dont have a support system, but ive been motivating myself to stop snacking and less soda. I've been working out (trying) Its so comforting to hear you talk about this.

The 4400 is where I was introduced to mahershala Ali! They put it on Netflix around when I was in highschool and it looked interesting so I watched it. It was so insane😭. I use it as my claim to being an og mahershala fan lol
