another great video..i read so many references about type C Hub will cause problem to M1 mac type C (due to power delivery), even though they use docking station with power adapter included in the box. Some of them will refer to expensive docking (costly more than $300 maybe) to avoid problem in mac M1 PD problem (short circuit), My question is to avoid those problem, is that better we plug the power directly through Mac M1 (not using PD input from HUB) ? yeah i know it will trade off your "single cable" advantage that connected to M1 Mac.
@ArtIsRight

You can always plug the power directly into any computer, not just M1 and use a HUB/dock. But I would test, errors could come from a software or setting on the users machine and issue might not be as wide spread as one might think it is. I have not run into any issues using numerous PD devices. So until you get yours don't worry and when you get it just test ;)

@@ArtIsRight ... That would be great if you get an opportunity to check because I need to get a good hub or dock. I purchased a Satechi hub about a year ago for my iPad Pro (2018) and when recording music there is a weird sort of high pitched feedback sound (squeaky) that makes it impossible to use the headphone jack on the hub while recording ... and when a microphone is plugged in, headphones are needed ... and bluetooth has latency ... so it's a problem that I need to solve. I don't mind spending a bit more money provided the other ports are fast (latest generation) so that the hub or dock doesn't quickly become obsolete.

It all depends on your workflow and what you need. One is not necessary better than the other, just made for different needs. If you are looking for a permanent fixture then yes the TB HUB works but for the price of the TB HUB you can get 2 of these USB Hub, give and take. Is it the same as getting a TB monitor, not quite, TB monitor are limited with the number of ports and connection and you'll never get ethernet on a monitor hub.

What are pros and cons of a bus powered hub likes these compared to one that plugs into the wall like cal digit TB3 hub?
@ArtIsRight
2 жыл бұрын
Bus power one will take power from the machine if it not constantly being fed a power source. Some don't like this because it drains battery and add cycle. And they don't want to leave the power plugged in either because they believe it shorten the battery life, which it does but the margins are so small and these batts are consumables that degrades over time. Some prefer the plug in because it is more robust and can provide power to more bus power devices. So there are give and take, it just really depends on what you want and care about. I would say for on the road, these bus power ones are great. For at home or office the powered one might be the better option. Hope this helps.

@@ArtIsRight i was sharing my experience with trying to use my MBA in clamshell mode w/o charging at all times and the frustrating Adapter situation. So essentially the Apple multiport AV is getting warm even when not in use (but still plugged in) Simultaneously the battery is drained by it. If I unplug it there’s no battery drain anymore. It appears that the Apple multi port AV adapter only has a “always on” while plugged in and also while the MacBook Air is in standby too. While this adapter has power delivery, I don’t want to be charging the MacBook Air beyond 80 or 90% all the time. I can get by a whole day without having to charge it while driving an external monitor usually, but while this adapter is plugged in I have to charge 3x times during the day. It appears all multi port AV adapters get warm even without being in use. So I bought a TB3 HDMI and a TB3 to display port cable. Thus far the later display port cable ended up being the most reliable solution for driving an external monitor. But now I need a relatively simple USBC hub that doesn’t get warm and doesn’t drain the MacBooks battery but gives me at least one USBC PowerDelivery port, one USBC 3.2 data port and at least 2x USBA3 ports, so that I can be plugging my older Apple keyboard and Logitech mx518 mouse. My hopes I that a relatively simple used PC2USB a hob won’t be draining the battery is much is a multiport adapter. It really isn’t convenient did although your MacBook Air can do a whole day with one charge ends at the end of the day is still has 30% left, while the multiport adapter is essentially shortening the battery life by 70%. (BT is not an option, too expensive)

Greetings Art. Thank you for providing information on both standalone and multiple hubs. I'm about to snag a Macbook Air M1 2020 base model and I would like to seek your advice on my intentions. 1. I'm attempting to buy these standalone wires/hubs for it: --a. 1--SD/microSD to USB-C Card Reader --b. 1--HDMI to USB-C Adapter --c. 1--4-Port USB-A to USB-C (Powered) Hub --d. 2--USB Micro B to USB-C cables [Used with external HDDs (Powered) or Portable SSDs to connect to the MBA) --e. 1--VGA to USB-C Adapter 2. And then I'm planning to buy a Multiple USB Powered hub like this one: Aukey CB-H19 [s.lazada.com.ph/s.h53Ay -- Power adapter plugged to an outlet] or the Orico 7-Port USB 3.0 F7U with Power Charger [s.lazada.com.ph/s.h5e0e -- Power used is a USB MicroUSB to USB-A to be plugged on a USB-A charging slot] 3. Scrap some of what's listed in number one and combine the rest with this something like the Anker 7-in-1 [s.lazada.com.ph/s.h53zr] *I'm not really a power user. BUT occasionally I do transfer files between two source drives which something like the Aukey 7-in-1 wouldn't be able to handle since it cuts off other ports just to accommodate other ports. *I do edit photos and videos but only occasionally as well. My work would often involve Web research, Word compositions, reports, video calls, etc. Hoping to hear from you based on your experiences on hubs. Thank you.
