There are dozens of Pro Mod race groups around the country and one of the more storied ones is the Big Dog Shootout, hosted by Piedmont Dragway. This year the group is making national news with several high-profile racers returning to the popular shootout format. The rules are simple with nitrous combinations limited to a 5-inch bore space engine combination and just two nitrous systems. Veteran Big Dog racer Cam Clark is coming out swinging in 2021 as he added FuelTech EFI to his Sonny’s Automotive powerplant, which is mounted in a Rick Jones Race Cars 1969 Chevy Camaro.
FuelTech offers Mainline Hub Dyno services to help racers dial-in their combinations as well as problem solve any issues with new car builds. In the case of Clark, the top-secret horsepower numbers were apparently too much for the third member. It expired after several all-out pulls; the team is replacing it with a more durable unit as they hit the track this Spring to take on the likes of Chris Rini, Brian Schrader, and many more.
EFI conversions are the latest trend in nitrous-powered drag racing applications and Clark turned to a FuelTech FT600 due to its extensive all-in-one feature list and incredible tech support. The renowned PRO-Nitrous Control is a key element to extracting the most power from the nitrous systems as Clark takes aim at the 3.80 zone. Other digital elements that the PowerFT engine management system offers are sequential injection and ignition, O2 closed loop, Traction Control, Data Logger, Delay Box, Boost Controller, and much more. The ECU box doubles up as an LCD display with a touchscreen showing real-time data and allowing the user to make adjustments without a PC connection. Each FT series ECU also includes data logging capabilities, making the FT600 and its sibling products a true all-in-one unit.
Data acquisition is another popular feature of the PowerFT line of engine management systems with accelerometer, gyroscope, and the ability to connect any sensor via CAN connection. The information is displayed with the engine and power management data, allowing the tuner to use only the FTManager software when analyzing the information. It streamlines the process for easy and quick changes for the next run. Clark’s Camaro utilizes FuelTech WB-O2 Nanos, which are connected to the FT600 via CAN connection, saving valuable space on the analog input channel line-up.
Running with the Big Dogs also requires huge spark power and control over it. The FTSPARK-8 GEN I Capacitive Discharge Ignition (CDI) is up to the challenge. It can provide up to 600mj of energy for the spark and 125 amps of current in the coil primary. Recently, FuelTech replaced the Gen I unit with a more powerful FTSPARK-8 Gen II, which yields a guaranteed minimum of 750mj of energy at 140 amps and has been tested up to 850mj in certain applications. FuelTech tests every unit prior to boxing to ensure each one meets their output guarantee. Eight CDI Racing Ignition Coils, also sourced from FuelTech, deliver the spark energy to each cylinder.
From the pro ranks of NHRA Pro Modified to the highly-competitive Big Dog Shootouts at Piedmont Dragway, FuelTech is powering boosted and nitrous-enhanced engine combinations to victories and record runs and that is the reason you’re seeing #FuelTechEverywhere
