Dry stone, sometimes called drystack or, in Scotland, drystane are terms that refer to a construction technique of traditional and popular origin that is done by using stones, but without using any mortar or mortar. Sometimes dry sand is used to fill the holes in the wall and that is where the name comes from[citation needed].
The pieces of rock (mampuestos), sometimes carved, are conveniently fitted together for the construction of structures (terraces, walls, dams, shepherd's huts and work in general) without the need for mortar to bind them together, simply due to the correct arrangement, the maximum contact between pieces and gravity itself.
UNESCO inscribed this practice on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2018, with the denomination Knowledge and techniques of the art of building walls in dry stone, territorially affecting Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Slovenia, Spain and Switzerland.
The origin of dry stone constructions can be traced back to antiquity with two premises that will run parallel with the passage of time: necessity and construction technique. Surely the first need was shelter from the inclemency of the weather and the second was defense against other groups.
