Alton Pierce was born in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. In 1943, Pierce volunteered to join the Army Air Corps. He was put on a train and sent to Miami for basic training. Pierce's training would prepare him to be a flight engineer. He had mechanic training at Roosevelt Field and the Casey Jones School of Aeronautics. He attended gunnery school as part of his training. Pierce reported to Florida for crew assignment and phase training. He became the engineer/top turret operator for crew #22, 569th squadron, 390th Bomb Group. After completing their training, the crew boarded the RMS Queen Elizabeth to be transported to Scotland. He was assigned to the air base at Framlingham, England. Pierce completed 35 combat missions. Something unusual was that Al Pierce and his brother Ted Pierce served on the same B-17 crew.
