Magnificent! There's something wonderfully masculine, direct, and non-indulgent about this performance. A totally serious, unblinking, profound expression of Bourget's poem.

Back in the Sixties and Seventies, II heard Pierre Fournier perform live on numerous occasions in Paris and in New York, in recital and as soloist with orchestra. I even played for him in a masterclass at the Yale University School of Music, and did not find the experience to be in any way nervous-making: his comments were positive, and his suggestions useful. What I loved about his performances was that he played like a human being, not like a superhero or a god. Nothing was ever exaggerated, and his performances were always so utterly natural-sounding and so very musical.

Intimate and etherial. Fournier makes his cello speak like an angel.

Sometimes romantic, and sometimes powerful. That's what every cellists want to achieve.
