As soon as I saw them announce it, my first thought wasn’t how the games played or looked, but rather how’d they go about dealing with the branded treasures in Pikmin 2 (like the Duracell batteries or the bottle tops). I honestly thought they didn’t wanna go through with editing or relicensing them which is why we’d never seen a more modern rerelease but it’s interesting to see they obviously put a bit of work in there. It is a a shame though, since seeing all those common everyday items in the game added to its charm, in my opinion.

I have great memories from the first Pikmin. Not that I hate Pikmin 2 and 3. But the first game had its survival element, you cared for your units - their loss felt crucial at times. There are several endings, making you want to complete the game under different conditions. And that music in the world map and the first level - omg. Pikmin 2 was a great sequel. Though as far as I remember I got a bit tired of it eventually. Units are almost limitless, red ones are like disposable soldiers. And underground levels can turn pretty long. Also several endings. Pikmin 3 had ‘the more the better’ approach. But I did not feel anything super great about it at all. Just beat it and remove the disc. Oh, and it basically has only one lame ending for whoever you completed the game.

people that complain about the 30 day time limit completely miss the point of the gameplay. Ignoring the story perspective its both a motivator that adds stakes and tension to the game that would otherwise have all its difficulty removed, but also serves as a means of being replayable and encouraging repeat playthroughs to beat your high score. Besides, 95% of normal people including children agree that 30 days is far more than enough time to beat the game. Pikmin 2 gets away with unlimited time because the game focuses more on the heavy combat in caves where resources are limited and rather than add pressure by making you go fast you instead take your time and make do with what you can bring. Even though the time limit could still work it would add very little to the experience overall.

@lukers9819
Жыл бұрын
Other games in the series do not need a day limit, but I truly believe that Pikmin 1 needed that time limit to be a great game. Not for gameplay purposes, but for story and thematic purposes. Olimar's urgency to survive to be able to see his family again is such a critical and endearing motivation. If the game was simply Olimar crash landed on the planet, but there is no urgency to leave whatsoever, the game loses one of the games biggest strengths. The other games don't need to have an arbitrary day limit, but the day limit in Pikmin 1 was not just a game mechanic. It was a tension that was felt by both the story's main protagonist and the player. The fear that a father and husband might never be able to see his family again. It is the reason why Olimar feels such a depth of gratitude to the Pikmin, as he literally owes his life to them. These emotions ring true all because of what in most games would just be a limit imposed for difficulty. Not all of the games in this series need a day limit, as not all of the stories need to evoke the same emotions. But Pikmin 1 was enhanced dramatically from a story and atmosphere perspective from this one addition.

I always forget that a lot of people really don’t like the 30 day time limit in pikmin 1. For me, that time limit is the reason why I fell in love with the series. The world of pikmin is vast and beautiful, but the threat of total destruction looming overhead if you’re not fast enough really grounds the game in a way that really works for me. Yes it’s stressful, that’s the point. It makes every victory feel like a huge gain, and really makes it feel like you’re beating the odds when you have a plan go just right. Losses are similarly amplified, which makes you really care about every decision you’re making. It also means something narratively. Olimar is a normal guy put in a truly life or death situation and you get to see how he reacts to it throughout the whole game. He’s genuinely intrigued by the pikmin and the world they live and he want to know more, while simultaneously being shaken by the idea that he might never return home. The story and gameplay here feed into each other masterfully. Olimar is already well written, but the constant ticking clock makes you relate to him even more, and really care about what he’s doing all this for.

take it from someone with personal experience with the first one, the timer is barely there by your second playthrough, and basically gone by your third lol. Agreed. Pikmin 2 can get you comfortable with the basics of Pikmin just fine, definitely enough that playing the first after that will make the timer a non issue. But the first game is lenient enough on its own and short enough that running into the time limit isn't the end of the world.

Not really sure what you guys mean when you talk about the 30 day timer being a negative, even back upon release? I was 8 years old when Pikmin came out, and even by then I had realized that a game is what the game is, not everything has to be "at your own pace". If you don't like the time limit, that's a you problem, it doesn't detract from the game. Consider that perhaps, Pikmin 1 just isn't a game that you enjoy.

Agreed. Gamers have gotten into this weird idea that every game should look, and control, and be exactly the same. Its like when people say the controls in the original Re4 are bad. They’re not bad. They’re just different.

Thanks for this! I will definitely be waiting for the physical versions of these. I remember liking these games quite a bit as a kid.

I dont even think it's the time limit that's bad. The time limit gives a sense of urgency in the levels and makes you want to replay it faster and faster, it naturally makes players want to speedrun and perfect strategy. What REALLY sucks is that in pikmin 1 if a pikmin enters a monsters mouth they're dead no matter what because even if HP of the monster hits 0 they'll finish the animation and then die. (there are some exceptions like the dwarf bulborb)

“Just simply an upscale” (it’s not scaling, right? It’s actually rendered at a higher resolution, not scaled) “Simply by having more polygons” (this seems to contradict the already inaccurate ‘just scaled’. My assumption here is they meant ‘more pixels’?) Could be wrong on both. But I left a bit confused as to what the heck is actually going on with this switch version.

Yeah, they definitely flubbed their words on those. Makes sense though because it looks like they cranked out the video pretty fast.

I just need to say, that I absolutly love the day limit in pikmin 1. It makes every mistake actually matter, on the following games, u could just make mistake after mistake, and you would always have more days to fix your mistakes, but on pikmin 1, if u messed up and couldn't find a part that day, than you are screwed, u need to somehow make it up in another day and find 2 parts, wich is really hard.

It has been a bit since I played the first 2, but I thought the days were 15 minutes. Also, the time limit in the first game was only an issue the first time I played it. After that I could always play through the game in 25 days or less. I bet there are some hardcore people who can do it under 20.

It depends which version of Pikmin 1 you played, but US/JP was 13:30 for each day while Pikmin 2 was 13:02 globally.

5:57-6-12 you forgot that white pikmin can SEE UNDERGROUND!!! and also that they poison enemies when they eat your poor whites. For purple pikmin you forgot to mention they STUN ENEMIES when THROWN on the top of the head (or sometimes maybe even from just landing next to the target) i think you said white were faster than all other pikmin but i think you forgot to mention that purples are sloooooow aaaaaffffff, even at flowers i think flower purples are the same speed as regual LEAF pikmin, or maybe buds AT MOST, they sure take their sweet time, but when they get there they pack a WHALLOP and get whatever needs doing done, even if, as stated, it just takes the time to get there, and taking treasure/corpses home

Remasters of classic games are system sellers in and of themselves. Loved the original Pikmin for Nintendo GameCube when I was a kid. I haven't had a Switch in awhile, but I bought a Switch OLED today just to have this experience again. Would love to see Zelda Wind Waker ported to Switch too. Thank you Nintendo :)

I've only ever played the first 2 games. I LOVE the first game, but the 2nd game I couldn't get into for whatever reason. I found it very boring to play, although I don't recall the reason why I found it so boring. I might not have known exactly why. All I know is that I didn't get far into it before giving up. I think I need to give it another go.
