In essence there's no difference between "Pilates", or "Pilates for men". As with most things the real difference is in the delivery, which comes down to the instructor.
Many don't realise that Pilates was created by a man, Joseph Pilates, who was instructing the UK police in self defence as a professional boxer in the early 1900s.
There is speculation why Pilates is seen as female dominated at the moment, a few of these reasons could be:
- A surprising amount of men and women do not realise men have a pelvic floor, it is a crucial muscle of the core that everyone has.
- Women tend to take more care of themselves generally.
- Men wait for a problem before they do something.
- In my opinion, as a guy, we think we know everything and have a fear of looking stupid. Neither mentalities work in a group exercise environment.
- Even wider group exercise classes e.g. spin, body pump, HIIT etc tend to be more heavily attended by females.
- With most instructors being female, often also instructing yoga or similar, are often ex dancers, or gymnasts, or just extremely flexible - delivery tends to reflect this background.
- The above has a "compound" effect which further puts men off.
I believe one of the main reasons that Pilates is heavily female dominated is because Joseph Pilates married a dancer, Clara.
After WW1 they moved to New York in to the same building as the New York Ballet - and thus, Pilates was heavily applied in that direction due to the physical performance enhancing benefits.
The benefits are recognised and utilised in pretty much all professional sports but this doesn't filter down to the every day person who is not paid to perform in sport or similar.
I thought I needed to avoid the female instructors, playing pan pipes and wind chimes while talking in a very calming voice, sounding a bit like the therapist I probably need.
I tried around 5 or so instructors, male and female, but the instructor I settled on was actually a lady who did use background pan pipes in her sessions, but her delivery clicked for me and I could overcome the music choice and the therapists voice to really get on board with Pilates - and it changed my life.
That's why I set up, to provide an accessible, practical approach to Pilates, without moving so quickly that it is difficult to follow, without being so flexible it all seems unachievable.
So - spread the word and come and give it a go if you haven't already!
