An off-duty Alaska Airlines believes a nervous breakdown caused him to pull red fire handles in the cockpit, which could have shut off the plane's engines, according to an affidavit filed with the District Court of Oregon.
Joseph Emerson is facing numerous charges, state and federal, including 83 counts of attempted murder, which he pleaded not guilty to, according to The Associated Press. According to the affidavit, one of the pilots told a police officer that he had engaged in casual conversation with Emerson at the beginning of the flight, but then suddenly noticed the 41-year-old throw his headset across the cockpit and say, "I am not okay."
